Men's Wrestling Begins New Year Looking to Clip Falcons of Notre Dame (Ohio)

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's wrestling team returns to action on Friday, January 5 when it takes to the mats for a dual match at Notre Dame (Ohio). The dual gets underway at 5:00 p.m. at Murphy Gymnasium. The Golden Knights last turned in a strong showing at the Midwest Classic, coming in 11th out of 51 teams on December 16-17.

Head coach Tom Boyd's team brings in a 2-1 record in dual competition, last upsetting Division I Kent State 20-19. The Golden Knights opened with a 43-3 win over Fairmont State before dropping a 20-15 decision to No. 12 Lake Erie. Gannon is ranked 16th in The Open Mat Top 25.

Four Gannon wrestlers medaled in the prestigious Midwest Classic, led by Jerry Echevarria's (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) fifth-place finish at 133 lbs. Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) placed sixth at 165 lbs. after reaching the semifinals and Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) was seventh at 125 lbs. Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) took eighth place at 184 lbs.

Gannon has six wrestlers ranked either by the NWCA or The Open Mat. However, Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler), who is nationally-ranked at 125 lbs., will not wrestle. Echevarria, a transfer from American International, is the top ranked Golden Knight. He is ranked eighth in both polls. Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) competes at 165 lbs. and is 11th in the NWCA rankings and 12th in The Open Mat poll.

Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) recently flipped weights, with Hivnor moving down to 174 lbs. and Casilio bumping up to 184 lbs. Casilio is now 15th at 184 lbs. in The Open Mat rankings and Hivnor is 19th at 174 lbs. Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) rounds out the Golden Knights in the rankings. He is 17th at 149 lbs.

Notre Dame (Ohio) comes in with a 0-6 record and placed 44th in the Midwest Classic. Two of the Falcons losses have been to nationally-ranked teams. Notre Dame showcases heavyweight La'Ron Parks who is ranked 17th in the latest The Open Mat rankings. The junior is a two-time national qualifier.
Matt Long (Corry, Pa./Union City) and Parks faced each other in the Midwest Classic with Long winning by fall at 0:31. Parks was ranked fourth at the time.

Gannon will send a contingent of 12 wrestlers to Edinboro on Sunday, January 7 for the Kauffman Open.
