Coreno, Golden Knights Upset No. 21 Kutztown 30-7

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's wrestling team made it back-to-back PSAC wins on Saturday morning with an impressive showing against 21st-ranked Kutztown. The two teams took to the mat at the Recreation and Wellness Center after Gannon had handled East Stroudsburg on Friday night and Kutztown posted an impressive 19-18 win at Mercyhurst.

The Golden Knights prevailed by a 30-7 score over the Golden Bears on Saturday to improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the PSAC while winning their sixth straight dual. Gannon would win eight of the ten matches with three of the final four by bonus points.

The key match of the day and the one that foiled any comeback hopes for the Golden Bears came at 165 lbs. as Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and Kutztown's Dalton Gimbor paired off in a matchup of ranked wrestlers.  Coreno, ranked 11th by the NWCA and 12th by The Open Mat, upset Gimbor, who was 7th and 13th, respectively, 4-1 to improve to 19-5 on the season. The night before Gimbor had upset Mercyhurst's Dylan Walker.

The match was scoreless after one period before Gimber escaped to start the second period. Coreno registered the lone takedown in the match with 1:17 left in the period. He rode out Gimbor the rest of the period. Coreno chose neutral to start the third and neither wrestler would score, with Coreno owning the riding time point.

Coreno's win made the match 15-4 after Gimbor's brother, Bailey Gimbor, had put Kutztown on the board with a 12-4 major decision at 157 lbs. over Ethan Richner (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High). Gimbor came in ranked 12th by the NWCA and 15th The Open Mat.

Gannon ran off wins by decision in the first four matches to jump ahead 12-0. No. 10/12 Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) (14-4) used a first-period takedown and a reversal in the third to defeat Trent Thompson 6-2.

No. 8/7 Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) followed with a 12-5 decision over Javien DeLeon at 133 lbs. The redshirt sophomore trailed 4-3 in the first period but gained control in the third period thanks to a reversal and two nera-fall points. He improved to 19-5.

Caleb Chaves (Odenton, Md./Arundel) (14-8) rallied for a 3-2 decision over Jared Fulton at 141 lbs. Chaves trailed 1-0 entering the third period before recording the lone takedown of the match with 1:18 remaining.

Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell), ranked 20th by The Open Mat, turned in a second straight strong showing from on top in his 149 lb. bout. The redshirt junior improved to 15-4 with an 8-2 decision over Aliazer Alicea. He led 4-0 thanks to a takedown after one period, then picked up a stalling point and two near-fall in the second. He owned nearly four minutes in riding time.

Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) picked up Gannon's first win by bonus points at 174 lbs. He won by technical fall over Alex Ward, 18-2 (6:12), improving to 15-5 in the process. Ranked 18th by The Open Mat, Hivnor jumped out to a 10-2 lead after one period on the strength of a takedown and tilting Ward twice for seven points. He added a pair of four-point near-falls in the second period.

The second match of the day between ranked opponents saw Kutztown's Matthew Weinberg, a returning All-American ranked third at 184 lbs., claim an 8-1 decision over Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area), who is 16-8 and was ranked 1th by The Open Mat.

Gannon closed out the win with bonus point victories at 197 lbs. and heavyweight. Andrija Ivanovic (Tuttlingen, Germany/Otto Hahn Gymnasium), filling in at 197 lbs., improved to 10-6 with a 14-4 major decision over Liam Akers. Thanks to a pair of takedowns he led 6-3 after one period, then used a third takedown and four near-fall points for a 12-4 advantage after two periods.

Matt Long (Corry, Pa./Union City) made short work of Dustin Swanson at heavyweight. He led 10-1 just over a half minute into the match on a pair of takedowns and four back points before pinning Swanson 39 seconds into the bout. Long is now 17-10.

Following the Gannon-Kutztown match the Gannon B Team wrestled Garrett College and came away with a 42-12 win.

A large contingent of Golden Knights will head to New York on Sunday to compete in the Jamestown CC Open. The Golden Knights' next dual is scheduled for Wednesday, January 31 when they wrestle at Seton Hill in another PSAC match.
