Gannon Celebrates Senior Night with Convincing 41-4 Win over East Stroudsburg

Golden Knights win seven bouts by bonus points

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's wrestling team debuted at home on Friday night while also celebrating Senior Night. It was a grand celebration for first-year head coach Tom Boyd in his first home dual as the Golden Knights dominated East Stroudsburg 41-4.

Gannon improved to 6-1 overall while winning its fifth straight dual and is now 3-0 in the PSAC. East Stroudsburg dropped to 3-3 and 0-3, respectively.

Friday's match is also Senior Night with 11 grapplers scheduled to be recognized. They include Hayden Butterfield (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic), Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler), Eddie Farrell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), Constantine Gehring (Owego, N.Y./Binghamton), Joel Huck (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf), Parker Loera (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), Matt Long (Corry, Pa./Union City), Marques McClorin (Meadville, Pa./Cathedral Prep), Jacob Onorato (Erie, Pa./McDowell), and Caden Wendling (Brook Park, Ohio/Berea-Midpark).

The Golden Knights won the first nine bouts, seven by bonus points, before the Warriors picked up a win in the heavyweight match. Gannon would total 23 takedowns to just four for ESU.

The match got underway with Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler), one of three wrestlers recognized on Senior Night, winning by technical fall 19-3 at 4:21 over Jason Athey at 125 lbs. Diaz, ranked tenth by the NWCA and 12th by The Open Mat, took a 10-1 lead after one period with a pair of takedowns and four near-fall points. He added two more takedowns in the second period while improving to 13-4.

At 133 lbs., Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) moved to 18-5 with another technical fall, 19-4 at 7:00, over Ben Makaritis. He would finish with six takedowns in all, three in the first period as he jumped out to a 9-2 lead.

Caleb Chaves (Odenton, Md./Arundel) made it three straight technical falls to open the match, winning 19-3 at 5:49, over Carlens Lapaix at 141 lbs. A takedown and four back points gave Chaves, now 13-8, a 7-0 lead after one period. He added two more takedowns in each of the next two periods.

Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell), ranked 20th by The Open Mat, and Patrick Noonan (5-1) of ESU turned in the most entertaining match of the evening at 149 lbs. Ryan fell behind 3-0 following a Noonan takedown in the opening minute. Ryan made it 3-1 with an escape and then recorded what would be the winning takedown with 20 seconds remaining in the period. Noonan started in the down position to start the second and while there was plenty of action Noonan could never escape. Ryan, now 14-4, chose the top to begin the third period and again was unable to get out as Ryan built up 3:33 in riding time for a 5-3 decision.

Ethan Richner (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High) (13-4) recorded the lone fall of the evening when he pinned Jack Spahn at 3:37. Spahn gained an early 3-0 lead but a reversal and four near-fall points gave Richner a 6-3 lead after one period. He added a pair of back points in the second before flattening Spahn.

Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) celebrated Senior Night with a win in the other close match of the evening against Luke Ciampa (23-6) of ESU. The two exchanged escapes in the second and third periods, but Coreno rode Ciampa for all but eight seconds of the second period while Coreno got out quickly in the third. The end result was a 2-1 decision for Coreno who came in ranked 11th by the NWCA and 12th by The Open Mat and is now 18-5.

Gannon's Coles, Hivnor at 174 lbs. and Casilio at 184 lbs., each won by technical fall. Hivnor needed 2:15 to post a 15-0 technical fall over Robert Burke. Following quick takedown he turned Burke four times for a total of 12 points. Hivnor, ranked 18th by The Open Mat, improved to 14-5.

Casilio followed with a 17-2 technical fall over Jarrett Pantuso at 5:49. Ranked 15th by The Open Mat, he improved to 16-7 thanks to the takedowns and a pair of four-point near-fall moves.

Anthony Glessner (Middletown, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) evened his record at 10-10 at 197 lbs. with an impressive win over Ajay Hiller. He dominated in the top position to drop Hiller to 18-9, recording four takedowns for a convincing 15-2 major decision. Glessner had a pair of takedowns for a 6-1 lead after one period, added a third to lead 9-1 after two periods, then rode a reversal and another takedown in the final period.

East Stroudsburg averted the shutout when 18th-ranked Layton Schmick won a 10-2 major decision at heavyweight over Matt Long (Corry, Pa./Union City) (16-10). He slowly pulled away with a pair of takedowns.

Gannon has little time to celebrate Friday's victory with Kutztown visiting the Recreation and Wellness Center for an 11:00 a.m. PSAC match.
