EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Gannon University acrobatics & tumbling team has begun peaking at the ideal time of year.
The Golden Knights turned in their second consecutive season-high score on Sunday while claiming a 277.645-249.380 victory over the Warriors at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Knights improved to 5-2, while East Stroudsburg dropped to 2-5.
Coach
Brandy Duren's team is ranked No. 5 in the NCATA Championship Rankings. Every win is crucial in April because the top eight teams in the final rankings on April 12 will advance to the NCATA National Championships on April 27-30 at West Liberty University in West Virginia.
Gannon has one more regular-season match remaining on Friday when it hosts Presbyterian College.
The Golden Knights were the NCATA national runner-up in 2022 when they lost to seven-time defending champion Baylor in the finals. GU also opened this season as the No. 2 team in the NCATA Preseason Poll.
Gannon's total of 277.645 marked the second straight meet that the Knights had scored over 275. They collected 275.095 points while beating Adrian on March 18 on Senior Day.
Gannon won each of Sunday's six events. In the first half of the meet, the Knights topped ESU 38.35-35-05 in the Compulsory event, 28.55-26.60 in the Acro, and 29.40-28.30 in the Pyramid. They were particularly strong in the Pyramid, where they scored 9.8 on Inversion, 9.75 on Synchronized, and 9.85 on Open Pyramid.
Gannon led 96.30-89.95 at the half.
The Golden Knights only extended the lead in the final three events. GU outscored ESU 29.05-26.15 in the Toss, including an outstanding 9.95 score in the Alto.
The Knights also dominated in the Tumbling, winning 56.075-45.200, including scores of 9.650, 9.775, and 9.750 in the solo passes.
Gannon then completed its victory by posting a season-best score of 96.22 in the Team event.
