EUGENE, Ore. – Two of the top five acrobatics & tumbling teams in the nation faced off on Friday night at Matthew Knight Arena.
No. 5 Oregon pulled ahead in the Tumbling Event and then preserved the lead in the Team Event finale as the unbeaten Ducks claimed a 257.05-253.74 victory over No. 2 Gannon.
The Ducks improved to 3-0 while ending Gannon's winning streak at three. Gannon dropped to 3-2 as it closed its western spring trip with a 1-1 record. The Knights opened the week with a victory over No. 3 Azusa Pacific on Monday.
Friday's competition was a homecoming for Gannon head coach
Brandy Duren, who competed at Oregon and was a member of the three National Championship acrobatics & tumbling teams.
Oregon opened the meet with a strong effort in the Compulsory Event, where Gannon is often strong. The Ducks beat the Golden Knights 38-15-36.35.
Gannon then won each of the next three events to close in on Oregon's lead.
GU bounced back to sweep each heat in the Acro Event for a 28.50-27.85 win.
The Golden Knights added a victory in Pyramid Event, 29.35-29.25, to cut Oregon's halftime lead to 95.25-94.20.
The Knights opened the second half of the meet with another event win, 28.90-28.15, in the Toss.
However, the meet then reached Oregon's strength – tumbling. The Ducks swept all six heats of the Tumbling Event and won the event 56.82-54.22 to take command of the overall meet.
Oregon clinched the win in the meet by edging Gannon 76.83-76.43 in the Team Event.
Gannon will return to Erie and have two weeks off before hosting Adrian College on March 18 at the Highmark Events Center.
