Gannon's Means, Farenchak, Young finish careers as multiple-time All-Americans

Dom Means placed 4th at 157 pounds, Alex Farenchak was 5th at 165, and Nick Young was 7th at 149

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Gannon's Dom Means (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), Alex Farenchak (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside), and Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander) established themselves among the Gannon greats during the careers, and they solidified that this weekend.

All three wrestlers stamped their place in Gannon history by becoming All-Americans again in the two-day NCAA Division II Championships at Alliant Energy PowerHouse.

Means led the way with a fourth-place finish at 157 pounds, while Farenchak placed fifth at 165, and Young finished seventh at 149.

In the process, they took their place in Gannon record books. Farenchak became Gannon's third three-time All-American, while Means and Young became the 11th and 12th wrestlers who were All-Americans at least twice.

The Golden Knights, coached by 39-year head coach Don Henry, were in 10th place among 50 teams after the placement rounds before Saturday night's title matches.

MEANS LEADS THE WAY

Means, DomDom Means (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), seeded No. 8 at 157, entered Saturday's action with a chance to become Gannon's fifth national finalist and second national champion. (Doug Joseph won the 197-pound title in 2001.)

However, No. 5-seeded Logan Bailey of Indianapolis ended those hopes with a 6-3 victory over Means in the semifinals.

Means had registered one of the biggest wins at the tournament on Friday night when he upset 2022 national champion Noah Hermosillo of Adams State 7-6 in the 157-pound quarterfinals.

Gannon's redshirt senior bounced back to beat King's Trent Mahoney 6-2 in the consolation semifinals to advance to the third-place match. There, he lost to Hermosillo 6-2 in a rematch.

Means finished the season with a 28-9 record and closed his career with a 74-26 mark.

He previously was an NWCA All-American in 2019-20 during the COVID year.

FARENCHAK TRIPLES UP

On Saturday, he won a 6-4 decision in the consolation third round vs. Anthony Herrera of St. Cloud State. After a loss in the consolation semifinals, the No. 2-seeded Farenchak capped his career with an 8-3 win over Alec Cook of West Liberty in the fifth-place match.

Farenchak previously was an NWCA All-American in 2019-20 during the COVID-interrupted year and in 2020-21 when he placed second in the nation. He missed the 2022 NCAA Championships with an injury.

He closed the season with a 15-2 record and with a 60-15 career mark.

YOUNG DOES IT AGAIN
