Gannon men's wrestling team's senior stars power PSAC rout of Millersville on Senior Night

Nationally ranked Nick Young, Dom Means, Alex Farenchak, and Joel Leise fuel GU's 37-5 victory

ERIE, Pa. – The four senior wrestlers in Gannon University's lineup posted impressive wins on Senior Night.

So did four underclassmen.

After trailing 6-3 early, the No. 11-ranked Gannon men's wrestling team won seven consecutive matches and ran off 34 unanswered team points in a 37-5 victory over No. 13 Millersville on Friday night in a PSAC matchup at the Highmark Events Center.

That run of victories included three consecutive wins by seniors Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander) at 149 pounds, Dom Means (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) at 157, and Alex Farenchak (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) at 165. Senior 197-pounder Joel Leise (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds) added a fourth win for a GU senior.

They were four of the seven seniors who were honored before the dual. Anthony Corigliano (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence), Reese Vollmer (Port Allegany, Pa./Port Allegany), and Gehrig Hutchison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) were also recognized for their Gannon careers but were not in the lineup against Millersville.

Gannon improved to 8-5 overall and remained alone in second place in the PSAC with a 5-1 record. The Golden Knights have one conference dual remaining at home against Seton Hill on Feb. 11.

Millersville dropped to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in the PSAC.

Gannon received a strong start as 125 pounds, as Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) opened an early lead and then held on for a 10-9 victory over Bryce Beatty.

GU 133-pounder Chase McLaughlin (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area) wrestled No. 1-ranked Devin Flannery and limited the heavily favored Flannery to just a 7-2 decision and three team points. Timothy Uhler's 2-0 overtime win over GU's Joel Huck (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) at 141 pounds gave the Marauders a 6-3 lead.

That's when Gannon's Young changed the momentum of the dual. Young, ranked No. 2 nationally at 149 pounds, faced No. 5 Craig Cook of Millersville. Both are strong defensive wrestlers who are adept at scrambling. That was obviousvthroughout the match as they engaged in multiple scrambles with each wrestler getting close to a takedown before the other countered.

After two scoreless periods, Young opened the third period by getting a reversal. After Cook gained an escape, Young protected his 2-1 lead until he added a takedown with five seconds remaining and earned a hard-fought 5-1 win. Young improved to 22-4 as he earned the 75th win of his career.

Young's victory triggered a run of wins by the Knights.

Means registered a fall over Jonathan Parrilla in 2:13 to give Gannon a 12-6 lead. Millersville was deducted a team point after the match for unsportsmanlike conduct as GU's advantage grew to 12-5. Means, ranked No. 8 nationally, moved his record to 21-6.

Farenchak, ranked No. 4 at 165 pounds, faced No. 11 Brandon Connor. Farenchak dominated the fourth period and claimed a 10-2 major decision to move to 8-0. His win extended the Gannon lead to 16-5.

Gannon redshirt freshman Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) followed with a 7-1 decision at 174 pounds, and fellow redshirt freshman Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) secured the dual win with a 53-second fall at 184 pounds.

The No. 11-ranked Leise made the score 31-5 with a pin of Daniel Pereira at 1:56 as he improved to 7-2.

Another redshirt freshman, heavyweight Eli Reese (Sarver, Pa./Knoch), capped the scoring by pinning Bishop McCoy in 6:08. It was Reese's team-best 10th pin this season as he moved to 13-10.
