Gannon Wins 20-13 Slugfest over Tiffin to Open Spring Trip

AUBURNDALE, Fla. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) and Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) drove in four runs apiece as the Gannon baseball team opened play in the Russ-Matt Invitational with a 20-13 win over Tiffin. The victory is the first of the season for the Golden Knights after dropping three games at Shippensburg last weekend.

The two teams combined for 33 runs, 32 hits and eight errors. Tiffin opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs, but Gannon came back with a run in the top of the second on Koroly's RBI single. The Golden Knights took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth with Koroly once again doing the honors. The freshman outfielder poked a single to centerfield to plate Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) and Vega.

The Dragons chased freshman starter Jacob Engel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) in the bottom of the frame while pushing across seven runs. They took advantage of five hits and a pair of errors in the inning.

The lead was short-lived as Gannon exploded for 13 runs in the top of the fifth. Gagnon opened the scoring with an RBI single, and Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) followed with a two-run double to right field. Following a pitching change, Koroly's double plated Zeroski. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) walked with the bases loaded to make it 9-8, and after another pitching change Ryan Kalbfus' (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) double to center drove in two runs to give the Golden Knights a 10-9 lead.

They were just getting started. Gannon would score six more runs with two outs. Cam Vozel and Zeroski both walked with the bases loaded to drive in runs. That brought Vega to the plate, and the junior second baseman drove a pitch over the fence in right field for a grand slam and a 16-9 lead. The inning finally ended with Gannon sending 17 batters to the plate and totaling six hits, six walks and a pair of hit batters.

Tiffin would score single runs in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but Gannon plated two runs in the sixth and scored a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) drove in the first run in the sixth with an infield single and Zeroski was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the second run. In the ninth, Gannon scored twice with two hits on an error.

Koroly ended the game with four hits in six at bats and drove in four runs. Vega had just the one hit in three at bats, but that was good for four RBIs. Gagnon was 2-for-2, while Bielanin and Kalbfus were both 2-for-6. The Golden Knights ran wild on the bases with 10 stolen bases, including five by Gagnon and two by Vega.

Gannon used four pitchers while Tiffin called on nine different hurlers. Engel made his first career start and pitched into the fourth, with Kyle Borrelho going 2/3 of an inning. Matt Graeber (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) picked up the win as the sophomore right-hander went 1.2 innings. Evan Harrison (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Aloysius Gonzaga S.S.) fired the final 3.2 innings to earn his first career save. He allowed just one earned run.

The Golden Knights are back in action on Sunday playing a doubleheader against Findlay. The first game in Davenport, Fla. gets underway at 1:00 p.m.
