Gannon Concludes Dual Season with Impressive 41-3 Win over Seton Hill

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's wrestling team concluded the dual portion of its season on Saturday evening with an impressive 41-3 win over Seton Hill at the Highmark Events Center. While winning for the fifth straight time the 11th-ranked Golden Knights improved to 9-5 overall and 6-1 in the PSAC. Seton Hill is 5-10 and 1-6 respectively.

Gannon won the final eight bouts, five by bonus points. The match got underway with Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) claiming a hard-fought 4-3 decision at 125 lbs. over Kyle Burkholder. While improving to 8-7 the redshirt senior registered the winning takedown with just over a minute left.

Seton Hill picked up its lone win of the evening at 133 lbs. as William Burgess claimed a 6-0 decision  over Chase McLaughlin (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area) (10-13).

It was all Gannon after that. Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) (10-5), ranked 18th by The Open Mat, used a big second period to win by technical fall, 18-0, at 4:52 over Joel Cawoski. Ryan opened the second period with his second takedown for a 4-0 lead, then proceeded to tilt Cawoski four times for a total of 14 points.

Second-ranked Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander) improved to 23-4 with a dominant performance at 149 lbs. Young was nearing a technical fall with a 15-2 lead in the second period over Dom Williams when he wrapped up the bout with his ninth fall of the season at 4:55. Young is now 23-4 and has won five straight matches.

Dom Means (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) (22-6) also won for the fifth straight time as he claimed a 12-8 decision over Jimmy Baxter. Ranked eighth at 157 lbs., Means appeared on his way to a bonus points win while dominating the first two periods with four takedowns for an 8-23 lead. Things would get a little interesting in the third period after a Means' escape made it 9-3. Baxter would record a takedown and two nearfall points to close to 9-7 before Means regained control with a reversal and over three minutes in riding time.

Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) took the mat at 165 lbs. in pace of starter and fourth-ranked Alex Farenchak (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside). The junior gave an impressive imitation of Farenchak as he gained control of the match vs. Kane Kettering in the second period with his second takedown and four nearfall points for an 8-1 lead. He eventually pinned Kettering at 4:55 to improve to 9-3.

Joey Petrella (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) made his return to the lineup at 174 lbs. and won a 1-0 decision over Brandon Matthews, who came in with a 15-8 record. Matthews chose the bottom to start the second period and was never able to get out as Petrella rode him out the entire period for what proved to be the winning margin. The redshirt sophomore, who is ranked 11th by The Open Mat, is now 7-1.

Redshirt freshman Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) continued his impressive wrestling at 184 lbs. as he dominated Riley O'Mara for an 18-0 technical fall just 1:51 into the match. Less than ten seconds in he took O'Mara down. He proceeded to tilt O'Mara for four points on four occasions. Hivnor is now 9-7.

Joel Leise (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds) wrapped up the wrestling at 197 lbs. with an 8-0 major decision to improve to 8-2. Ranked 11th, Leise wore own Nick Whittington a takedown in each of the three periods. He gained a point for stalling and had over four minutes in riding time.

Eli Reese (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) (14-10) won by forfeit at heavyweight.

While some of Gannon's wrestlers will compete in the John Carroll Open on Sunday and the Throwdown Thursday on Thursday, February 16, but the starters now prepare for the NCAA Division II Super Region One Championships on Saturday, February 25. East Stroudsburg is hosting the qualifier for the NCAA Division II National Championships.
