Golden Knights Split Pair of Duals in Storm Quad Meet to Present Boyd with First Career Win

Gannon smothers Fairmont State, drops tight match to No. 12 Lake Erie

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Gannon men's wrestling team wrestled in dual competition for the first time under head coach Tom Boyd on Saturday with a pair of matches in the Storm Quad Meet hosted by Lake Erie. The Golden Knights presented Boyd with an impressive 43-3 win over Fairmont State to open the day, then dropped a hard-fought 20-15 loss to No. 12 Lake Erie.
 
Gannon was led by four wrestlers who won both matches on Saturday. Heavyweight Matt Long (Corry, Pa./Union City) led the way with a pair of falls. Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) won twice at 125 lbs., including a technical fall. Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) also eon by technical fall and decision, while Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) had a win by fall and then needed sudden victory to pick up the win vs. Lake Erie.
  
Gannon 43, Fairmont State 3
The Golden Knights dominated the action against Fairmont State, winning the first eight bouts before the Falcons picked up a decision at 197 lbs. All told Gannon won nine of ten matches and had 21 takedowns to just three for Fairmont State, all in the 197 lb. match. Gannon won seven bouts by bonus points, including quick falls by Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and Matt Long (Corry, Pa./Union City) at 184 lbs. and heavyweight. Hivnor won by fall in 19 seconds and Long followed with a 24-second pin. Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) opened the match with a technical fall at 125 lbs., and Gannon then ran off four straight technical falls – Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) at 149 lbs., Ethan Richner (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High) at 157 lbs., Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) at 165 lbs. and Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) at 174 lbs.

As usual Gannon and Lake Erie had a hotly-contested dual. The Storm came in with a lineup featuring five ranked wrestlers and each picked up wins to pave the way. But then dual was not decided until 18th-ranked Brylan Clouse edged Anthony Glessner (Middletown, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) at 197 lbs. 4-3 thanks to riding time. Anthony Diaz rode a late reversal to win at 125 lbs. over Anthony Sagaris. Freshman Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach), ranked 20th at 133 lbs. and Ryan Wehner had the best match of the day. Wehner finally prevailed 2-1 in two tiebreakers as the two wrestled for 11 minutes. Lake Erie ran off three straight wins behind nationally-ranked wrestlers to lead 14-3 after the 157 lb. bout. Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) stopped the run with a 6-4 decision at 165 lbs. That brought up a match that was much closer than the final score indicated at 174 lbs. Lake Erie sent out top-ranked James Penfold and Gannon countered with No. 7 Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area). Penfold held a 5-3 lead midway through the third period but Penfold registered a takedown in the final 20 seconds and owned riding time. The 184 lb. bout also went to sudden victory with Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) registering a takedown in the extra period for a 9-6 win.
