INDIANAPOLIS – Four Gannon wrestlers earned medals at the highly competitive Midwest Classic, led by
Jerry Echevarria's (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) fifth-place finish at 133 pounds on Sunday.
Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) placed sixth at 165 pounds,
Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) finished seventh at 125, and
Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) took eighth at 184 for the Golden Knights.
Their efforts helped Gannon finish 11th in the massive 51-team tournament, which was hosted by the University of Indianapolis at Nicoson Hall/Ray Skillman Court. Gannon finished with 78 points as Lander (S.C.) won the team title with 126 points.
Echevarria went 3-1 on Sunday in the consolation rounds, losing only a 7-4 decision to Tommy Frezza of Central Missouri in the consolation semifinals. Echevarria then capped his weekend with a 16-4 major decision over Elijah Lusk of Lander in the fifth-place match.
The Gannon sophomore posted a 6-2 record over the two days as he improved his season record to 16-4.
Coreno had a big day on Saturday, going 3-0 and advancing to Sunday's semifinal match. However, he ran into some tough competition on Sunday. He just missed advancing to the title match when he lost 4-1 in sudden victory to Chase Luensman of Upper Iowa after the two were tied 1-1 through three periods.
Coreno (15-5) then lost two more times in the consolation rounds as he placed sixth.
Diaz had a solid day on Sunday, going 2-1 in the consolation bracket. He opened with an 18-12 decision over Jaden Verhagen of Mary to secure a medal. After a loss in the next round, he claimed an 11-2 major decision over Pitt-Johnstown's Trevon Gray in the seventh-place match. Diaz is now 12-4 on the season.
Casilio (12-7) had a tough-luck day in the consolations. He opened with a 4-2 win over Lander's Jack Bond to clinch a medal. However, he suffered one-point losses in his next two matches, falling 11-10 to Jason Bynarowicz of Colorado Mesa and dropping a 4-3 decision to Colter Bye of Upper Iowa in the seventh-place match.
Gannon's
Caleb Chaves (Odenton, Md./Arundel) (141) and
Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) (174) each lost their only match on Sunday to fall just short of earning a medal.
The Golden Knights will be off until Jan. 5 when they will travel to Ohio to face Notre Dame College in a dual meet.
