INDIANAPOLIS – Gannon'sÂ
Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) has moved into the semifinals of the prestigious Midwest Classic through Day 1 of the two-day tournament.
Coach
Tom Boyd's Golden Knights had a strong opening day of the tournament, led by Coreno. Six of Gannon's 10 wrestlers remained alive, including five wrestlers in the consolation bracket, going into the final day.
Gannon was in 10th place among 51 teams with 58Â points after Day 1. Lander leads with 83Â points.
Coreno continued his fine senior season as he went 4-0 at 165 pounds on Saturday. He emerged on the winning end of three decisions, beating Ivan Smith Jr. of New Mexico Highlands 8-1, Aaden Valdez of Adams State 8-4, and Luke Ciampa of East Stroudsburg 8-1 to reach the quarterfinals. He then edged Owen Zablocki of Indianapolis 6-2 in the quarters.

Coreno will take a 15-2 season record into his semifinal match against Chase Luensman of Upper Iowa on Sunday.
Gannon's
Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) and
Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) also reached the quarterfinals.
After a first-round bye at 125 pounds, Diaz won a 13-8 decision over Guy Clevenger of Central Oklahoma and an 8-1 decision over Landen Fischer of Northern State.
Diaz (10-3) then dropped a 17-6 major decision to Christian Mejia of McKendree. Diaz will continue in the consolations on Sunday.
After a first-round bye at 184, Casilio advanced to the quarterfinals with two high-scoring wins. He claimed a 15-0 technical fall over Jarret Pantuso of East Stroudsburg. He then won 17-10 over Cole Gray of Western Colorado. Casilio (11-4) then lost a 5-2 decision to Reece Worachek of Wisconsin-Parkside int he quarterfinals.
Gannon's Jerry Echeverria (133 pounds),
Caleb Chaves (Odenton, Md./Arundel) (141), and
Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) (174) also are still in contention for a medal after staying alive in consolations on Saturday.
Echeverria went 3-1 as he improved to 13-3 on the season.
Chaves suffered a one-point loss in the second round, but he claimed four consecutive consolation wins to move to 5-1 on the day.
Hivnor earned back-to-back wins to open the tournament. After a loss in the third round, he stayed alive with 10-5 and 14-9 decisions as he moved to 10-4.
