Gannon to Host First Wrestle-offs with Boyd as Head Coach

ERIE, Pa. – First-year Gannon men's wrestling coach Tom Boyd will send his Golden Knights to the mat for the first time on Saturday, October 28 as the Golden Knights hold the annual Maroon & Gold Wrestle-offs. The action will get underway at 9:00 a.m. on two mats in the Recreation & Wellness Center.

A total of 31 wrestlers are expected to compete for spots in the lineup. "We had a great pre-season, and we are ready to go," exclaimed Boyd. "Wrestle-offs are what the pre-season and all the hard work since the previous season is all about. It lets these guys go out and earn the starting spot. I don't pick. I want to see who will step up, who will wrestle under the lights and get the job done. We always talk about iron sharpening iron, and wrestle offs are one of the ways that will push us to go from good to great.

Competition will take place in seven weight classes, with seven wrestlers set to compete at 141 lbs. and six at 133 lbs. There will be no competition at 174 lbs., 184 lbs., and heavyweight.

Six starters return from last year's lineup, but Boyd must replace the anchors of the lineup in All-Americans Alex Ferenchak, Dom Means (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander), plus Joel Leise (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds). Three national qualifiers return in Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) (125 lbs.), Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) (141 lbs.) and Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) (174 lbs.). Ryan is moving up to 149 lbs. this year.

A strong recruiting class plus a group of returning wrestlers who have waited their turn to step into the lineup will fortify the lineup. Gannon will take mat officially for the first time on Saturday, November 4 at the Mount Union Invitational/
