LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The return of three veteran standouts highlighted the Gannon University men's wrestling team's performance in the NWCA National Duals on Friday at the Kentucky Expo Center.
 
Alex Farenchak (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside), Joey Petrella (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley), and Joel Leise (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds) each made their long-awaited season debuts in the event, but Gannon went 1-2 and was eliminated from the tournament.
 
The Golden Knights (2-3) opened the National Duals with a 21-19 loss to No. 12 Indianapolis. Coach Don Henry's Knights dropped into the consolation bracket where they stayed alive with a 27-12 win over Augustana (S.D.). However, Gannon met No. 2-ranked Nebraska-Kearney in the second round of consolations and dropped a 24-13 decision.
 
The highlight for Gannon was the return from injury by 165-pounder Farenchak, a former All-American who was ranked No. 1 in the nation when he suffered a season-ending injury last season. He finally was ready to return Friday, and he was impressive.
 
He opened with a 4-1 decision over No. 8-ranked Jack Eiteljorge of Indy. Farenchak won a 5-2 decision over Augustana's Tyler Wagener and then closed his day with a 9-6 win over Nebraska-Kearney's Kaden Hart.
 
Gannon 197-pounder Leise went 2-1 in his first action of the season. His pin of Augustana's Max Ramberg was the clinching victory in that dual when Gannon was clinging to a 15-12 lead. He also claimed a 5-3 win over Nebraska-Kearney's Dylan Vodicka.
 
Petrella made his season debut at 174 pounds and had a strong opening match. He won a 9-1 major decision against Indy's Owen Butler. Petrella lost his second match 9-7 in sudden victory against Augustana and did not wrestle in the final dual.
 
No. 2-ranked Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander) of Gannon improved to 17-3 with a 3-0 day at 149 pounds. He claimed two decisions and a fall.
 
Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) (141) and Dom Means (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) (157) each went 2-1 for the Golden Knights.

NUWAY OPEN
 
Gannon also had nine wrestlers competing in the NUWAY Open, which took place alongside the National Duals at the Kentucky Expo Center.

Parker Laura went 5-1 on Friday and led Gannon with a third-place finish. He advanced to the semifinals where he took his only loss of the tourney. He later won by medical forfeit in the third-place bout.

Meanwhile, Eli Reese (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) suffered an opening loss at heavyweight, but he responded with five consecutive victories to claim fifth place. Among those wins were four consecutive pins. He shut out Baldwin Wallace's Mitch Sanders 5-0 in the fifth-place match.

Other standouts for Gannon were 141-pounder Joel Huck (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) and 165-pounder Marques McClorin (Meadville, Pa./Cathedral Prep). Both GU wrestlers went 4-2 in the NUWAY Open although neither placed in his division.

SATURDAY DUALS

Even though Gannon was eliminated from the NWCA National Duals championship brackets, the Golden Knights were guaranteed five duals at the event. As a results, they wrestled two duals on Saturday and finished 1-1.

The Knights lost to McKendree 21-12 and defeated Fort Hayes State 24-21.

Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) (141), Hayden Butterfield (Erie, Pa./McDowell) (149), and Ethan Richner (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High) (165) each had two victories in those duals for Gannon.
