EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Now that's how a team should finish in college wrestling.
The Gannon University men's wrestling team closed the dual with four consecutive first-period pins on Saturday morning as the Golden Knights pulled away for a 36-10 rout of East Stroudsburg in a PSAC matchup at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Coach
Don Henry's No. 11-ranked Gannon team completed a weekend road sweep of PSAC foes after beating Kutztown 29-12 on Friday night. The Golden Knights improved to 7-5 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC as they remained in second place in the conference.
East Stroudsburg dropped to 3-6 overall and 0-4 in the PSAC.
Gannon led just 12-10 after the 165-pound match, but 174-pounder
Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) triggered a run of falls that sealed the Knights' victory. He pinned ESU's Robert Burke 2:53 into the first period to expand GU's lead to 18-10. Casilio evened his record at 7-7.
Gannon 184-pounder
Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) then followed Casilio with a fall against Josh Leidig in 2:04. Hivnor's fourth pin of the season moved his record to 7-7 and gave GU a 24-10 lead while securing the dual victory with two matches remaining.
The Golden Knights were not done there, though. In the 197-pound match, No. 11-ranked
Joel Leise (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds) pinned the Warriors' Ajay Hiller in just 1:19. Leise moved his record to 6-2 for the season.
Gannon heavyweight
Eli Reese (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) then closed the dual with an exclamation point. He pinned ESU's Thomas Flood in 1:44 to cap the Knights' victory. Reese improved to 12-10 with his team-high ninth fall this season.
The Golden Knights also received victories from
Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell),
Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander), and
Dom Means (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic).
Ryan was dominant in the top position as he improved to 9-5 with a 16-0 technical fall over Jack Dardia at 141 pounds.
Young, ranked No. 2 in Division II at 149 pounds, then claimed a 16-2 major decision against Brian Lombardi. Young improved to 21-4 on the season. It was his 14th bonus-point win of the season after he earned a technical fall on Friday. He outscored his two opponents 31-2 this weekend.
Means, ranked No. 8 at 157 pounds, claimed Gannon's other win. He moved to 20-6 with an 8-1 decision over Bryce Parenti.
Gannon is not done this weekend. The Knights will take their B Team to Jamestown Community College on Sunday.
