11th-Ranked Golden Knights Dominate Shippensburg 44-3

ERIE, Pa. – The No. 11 Gannon men's wrestling too advantage of three falls and a technical fall to hand Shippensburg a 44-3 defeat in a PSAC dual on Saturday morning. The Golden Knights evened their record at 5-5 and are 2-1 in the PSAC while Shippensburg fell to 6-6 and 1-3 in the league.

The Golden Knights had little trouble with a young Raiders' lineup that wrestled at Mercyhurst on Friday night and lost one of its top wrestlers to injury during the match.

Gannon picked up forfeit wins at both 125 and 133 lbs. with the injury to Tyshawn White, who was ranked 11th at 125 lbs. It would not have mattered, as head coach Don Henry's team won the next seven bouts to go ahead 44-0 before Shippensburg's Danny Scheib won a 6-3 decision over Eli Reese (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) (11-9) at heavyweight to avoid the shutout. Gannon finished with a 12-4 advantage in takedowns.

After the two forfeits Gannon won the next two matches by fall. Redshirt sophomore Joel Huck (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) improved to 7-7 with a fall at 2:23 over Al Miscovich at 141 lbs. Second-ranked Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander), now 19-4, followed with an electrifying fall at 4:28 at 149 lbs. over Mike Trainor. The graduate student had forged a 12-1 lead, with a 10-point first period. From the neutral position he flipped Trainor to his back with a bear hug for the quick pin.

Dom Means (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and Avery Shay battled in the most anticipated match of the dual. Means, a redshirt senior, came in ranked eighth at 157 lbs. while Shay is a graduate transfer from Clarion who was undefeated at 7-0. Means (18-6) would control the action to come away with an 8-3 decision. Following a scoreless first period he used a big second period with an escape, takedown, and four near-fall points to go ahead 7-0. Shay got on the board with an escape in the third, and he added a takedown at the buzzer, with Means owning riding time.

Two of the next three weight classes featured bonus-point wins, beginning with Alex Farenchak (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) improving to 6-0 with a 22-6 technical fall over Kyle Everly at 5:12 in their 165 lb. bout. The number-four ranked wrestler at 165 lbs. had eight takedowns, including a six-point move with four back points in the second period.

Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) took the mat at 174 lbs. and boosted his record to 6-7 with an 8-2 decision over Nyiem Flucas. The redshirt freshman had a takedown in the first period and picked up four near-fall points in the second.

Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) followed with a quick pin of Owen Koch at 184 lbs. The redshirt freshman is now 6-6 after an early takedown, then working Koch for the fall just over a minute later at 1:29.

Joel Leise (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds), ranked 11th at 197 lbs., faced Shippensburg's Trey Shoemaker, who came in with a 14-3 record. Leise dominated the match with 5:43 in riding time while posting a 5-0 decision. Now 4-2, the redshirt senior recorded a takedown 20 seconds into the match and rode out Shoemaker. He kept the Raider on the mat the entire second period, as well, before his takedown midway through the third period made it 4-0.

Gannon also won all four exhibition matches that followed the dual, the final three by fall.

The Golden Knights return to action next weekend with a pair of PSAC matches. They wrestle at Kutztown on Friday, January 27 before heading to East Stroudsburg on Saturday, January 28.
