Three Different Players Record Hat Tricks as Gannon Wins 12-1 at D'Youville

Del Castillo scores five goals, Knox and Querling add three apiece

BUFFALO, NYSergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) registered a hat trick for the second straight match and scored five goals in all to lead the Gannon men's soccer team to a 12-1 win at D'Youville on Monday night. Del Castillo was one of three Golden Knights to record hat tricks. Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) and Benjamin Querling (Zuelpich, Germany/Emil-Fischer Gymnasium) added three goals each. Gannon is now 5-2-1 while picking up its second straight win, while D'Youville is 1-6-0. The 12 goals are the most since Gannon defeated Hilbert 19-1 on October 21, 1992.
 
Del Castillo accounted for Gannon's first two goals as the Golden Knights jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead. He opened the scoring just 2 minutes, 3 seconds into the game thanks to a pass from Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo). His second goal was assisted by Pau Ferrer (Valencia, Spain/ISES Isabel de Villena), with the score coming at 20:30.
 
Joe Knox's (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) first goal of the season, an unassisted score, boosted Gannon's lead to 3-0 and came just two minutes later. Del Castillo made it two straight hat tricks with another unassisted goal, his third of the match, at 26:14. The senior had three goals in Saturday's 6-2 win over Wheeling.
 
The Golden Knights added eight goals in the second half. Knox scored his second goal, with Aanberg assisting for the second time, at 51:08. Three minutes later the Saints found the back of the net, courtesy of Felipe Santos, for the sixth goal of the season.
 
Gannon ran off four goals in a period of six minutes to make it 9-1. Del Castillo accounted for the first two to give him five for the match and 11 for the season, the first assisted by James Pool (Hastings, England/Claverham) and the second by Jake Sterio (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor). Knox scored at 61:32 to complete his hat trick, and Petter Dyrkorn (Sandvika, Norway/Doenski Videregaaende Skole) followed with his first career goal at 62:55.
 
Benjamin Querling (Zuelpich, Germany/Emil-Fischer Gymnasium) scored Gannon's final three goals over the last 15 minutes to give Gannon a third player with a hat trick. Agustin Soldo (Valencia, Spain) assisted on the second goal.
 
After scoring just three goals in the previous four matches, Gannon broke out of its offensive slump in a big way the last two contests. The Golden Knights have now scored 18 goals in win over Wheeling and D'Youville.
 
Gannon held a wide 40-5 advantage in shots, including 23-5 in shots on goal. The Golden Knights also had 10 corner kicks to two for the Saints. David Synstelien (Gjovik, Norway/Gjovik Vinderegaende) started in goal and played the first 72:30 with five saves. He came off the pitch for the first time this season, giving way to Georgios Koutroulis (Monchengladbach, Germany/Bischofliche Marienschule) for the final 17:30.
 
After playing twice in the last three days Gannon will have a few days before returning to action on Saturday, September 24 at Slippery Rock in a PSAC West contest. It begins a stretch of three straight road games.
