SLIPPERY ROCK, PA –
Sergio Del Castillo (Madrid, Spain) and the Gannon University men's soccer team continued their hot streaks on Saturday.
Del Castillo had his third consecutive multi-goal game, and the Golden Knights recorded their third win in a row in a 2-0 victory over Slippery Rock University on Saturday afternoon.
Gannon improved to 6-2-1 overall and moved to 1-0-1 in the PSAC West. SRU dropped to 4-3-1 and 2-1-0.
Del Castillo entered Saturday's game leading NCAA Division II with 11 goals and 24 points. He scored both Gannon goals on Saturday as he increased those totals to 13 goals and 28 points. The senior midfielder has scored 10 goals in his past three games, which included a hat trick against Wheeling (WV) and a five-goal outburst against D'Youville.
Gannon has now outscored its past three opponents by a combined 20-3.
Del Castillo scored both goals in the first half on Saturday. He struck first at the 36:28 mark, when scored off an assist from
Toby Gower (Norwich, England/Long Stratton).
Just 2:10 later, Gannon drew a foul in the box. Del Castillo took the penalty kick and scored, booting a low strike to the left side under the goalkeeper's arm.
Gannon's defense played extremely well in earning the shutout. The Knights outshot the Rock 17-6 and finished with a 10-1 advantage on shots on goal. Goalie
David Synstelien (Gjovik, Norway/Gjovik Vinderegaende) had to make only one save for the shutout.
The Golden Knights return to action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when they visit Pitt-Johnstown for another PSAC West game.
