White Repeats as PSAC Women's Golf Athlete of the Year, Petersen Earns Freshman of the Year Honors

Arenas, Maestro Also Earn All-PSAC Accolades

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference today released the 2021-22 All-PSAC Women's Golf Teams, with Gannon well represented. In fact, head coach Scott Stano's Golden Knights had four players earn All-PSAC accolades while Gannon garnered two of the three major postseason awards.

Sarah White (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) repeated as the PSAC Women's Golf Athlete of the Year, while teammate Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole) was selected the Freshman of the Year. Mercyhurst's Ron Coleman was voted the Coach of the Year.

White and Petersen earned first team All-PSAC honors, while Maria Arenas (Bogota, Colombia/) and Ana Maestro (Seville, Spain/Albaydar) were selected to the second team.  White is now a two-time All-PSAC first team honoree, while Arenas is a three-time selection, earning first team accolades the previous two years.

Gannon enjoyed another outstanding season under Stano. The Golden Knight captured their third straight PSAC championship and went on to finish 12th at the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional. The Golden Knights also won the Charleston Invitational, Klash in Kentucky, Mercyhurst Spring Invitational and Gannon Spring Invitational.

White, a sophomore from Erie, Pa., was selected the PSAC Athlete of the Year and Freshman of the Year last season, just the third women's golfer to win both honors. She now becomes the first to repeat as the Athlete of the Year since 2017-18 and 2018-19 and the fourth women's golfer overall to repeat. It is the third time Gannon has won the PSAC Athlete of the Year, with Diana Munoz recognized in 2016-17.

She averaged 79.2 over 25 rounds, finishing in the top ten in seven tournaments. That included a first-place showing in the PSAC Championships. She rallied from five strokes down in sixth place at the start of the third round to fire a 77 and win by a stroke with a 54-hole total of 238. White fired a season-best 73 in the Evann Parker Memorial. She was named the PSAC Athlete of the Week once. A year ago she averaged 80.2 on the season.

Gannon has now captured the PSAC Freshman of the Year three straight years and five times overall. Petersen joined the team in January and made an immediate impact. In fact, the native of Denmark would finish with the lowest average on the team at 78.9 over 14 rounds, with six top-ten finishes. That included three second-place showings, including a tie for second in the PSAC Championships at 239, one shot behind White. She also came in second in the Klash in Kentucky and Gannon Spring invitational.

Petersen's low round was a 73 in the Klash in Kentucky. The freshman led Gannon with a 36th-place showing in the Atlantic/East Regional, one spot ahead of White. She was twice named the PSAC Athlete of the Week.

Arenas averaged 82.8 over 18 rounds after averaging 84.3 a year ago.  The junior from Colombia finished in the top ten in four tournaments, including a tie for sixth place in the PSAC Championships with a 242 total over 54 holes. That included a low round of 75 on the final day. She also finished sixth in the Browngolf Intercollegiate. Arenas was the 2020-21 PSAC individual champion and was selected the 2019-20 PSAC Freshman of the Year.

Maestro is a sophomore and a native of Spain who earned All-PSAC honors for the first time. She posted an 82.7 average over 25 rounds, improving almost three strokes after averaging 85.3 a year ago. She earned four top-ten finishes, including a win over Petersen in a playoff to finish first at the Mercyhurst Spring invitational. She came in fifth at the PSAC Championships with a 54-hole total of 241. She finished with a low round of 78 on four occasions.
