Kreidinger Scores 100th Career Goal in Loss at La Salle

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – After visiting the City of Brotherly Love with a three-game winning streak, the Gannon women's water polo team found their three Division I opponents over the weekend not to be very brotherly, at least on the scoreboard. After a pair of overtime losses on Saturday, the Golden Knights fell victim to a scoring drought on Sunday morning to wrap up the La Salle Invitational with a 19-9 loss to host La Salle. That left the Golden Knights at 5-8, while the Explorers improved to 12-7.

Gannon went goal-for-goal with La Salle until midway through the second quarter. The contest was tied at 4-4 after one quarter, with Julia Kreidinger (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) scoring twice in the period. The first not only gave Gannon a 3-2 lead, but was the 100th of her career at Gannon.

La Salle opened the second quarter with a pair of goal to grab a 6-4 lead, but Nicole Wiemken (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) scored twice in the span of a minute, the second leaving Gannon trailing by just a goal at 7-6 with 5:05 left in the period.

The Golden Knights would not score again, however, until three minutes into the fourth quarter. By that time, La Salle had run off 12 straight goals to take a 19-6 lead. The drought of over 16 minutes finally ended when Wiemken found the back of the net on a penalty shot with 5:45 remaining in the contest. Wiemken would score the final three goals of the contest.

Wiemken led the Golden Knights with 6 goals, a team season-high. Kreidinger scored twice and Beatrice Popescu (Bucharest, Romania/Railway Tech) had the other goal. Kate Baker (Erie, Pa./McDowell) had a pair of assist and Rachel Kreidinger (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) was credited with one. Freshman Moly Sebunia made her first start in goal and registered five saves.

La Salle finished with 32 shots and Gannon 24. Both teams struggled on the power play, with Gannon going 1 of 8 and La Salle 2 of 7.

Gannon is back in action next weekend in the WWPA Conference Weekend in Lebanon, Ill. The Golden Knights play three conference foes on Saturday, March 19 and Sunday, March 20. They open at McKendree at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday before a 4:00 p.m. contest against crosstown-rival Mercyhurst. On Sunday they get going early with a 9:00 a.m. contest vs. Salem.
