Gannon Celebrates Senior Day, Splits Sunday Home Doubleheader

ERIE, PA - The Golden Knights split the second day of the WWPA Erie Classic, falling 14-12 in a back-and-forth affair with conference foe McKendree before defeating Penn State Behrend while celebrating Senior Day.  

Game one saw the Golden Knights take an early lead on a steady barrage of goals. Gannon would take a 5-1 lead after surrendering the first goal, but were outscored 6-2 in the second period, proving to be the difference.  

Before the second game, Gannon honored seniors Kerstyn Farley (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona) and Molly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) as part of Senior Day. From there, GU dominated in their home finale, taking down the Lions, 24-8. Gannon would score nine in the first period en route to a convincing victory. 

 
THE KNIGHT CAP - GAME 1 

  • Fast Start- Gannon would take a 5-1 lead early in the game after allowing the first goal. Four goals in a span of 4:58 at the end of the first period had the Golden Knights ahead 4-1 after eight minutes, and Claudia Orte Blanch (Madrid, Spain/IES Profesor Maximo Trueba) scored her second of the game early in the second to make it 5-1.  

  • Second Period Struggles- That, however, is when McKendree took over the game. The Bearcats would outscore Gannon 6-2 in the second to take a 7-6 lead at the half. Gannon looked to mount a comeback late in the game on Orte Blanch's hat trick tally with a minute left, but Gannon could not score the required two goals to force extra time.  

  • Other Scorers – Maria Martinez (Barcelona, Spain/JesuĂŻtes GrĂ cia Col·legi Kostka) had five goals, her ninth straight game with at least three ... Orte Blanch finished with four points and three goals ... Brigid Carmody (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) added a goal and two helpers ... Carissa Jones (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) had two goals. 

THE KNIGHT CAP - GAME 2 

  • Early Barrage - Gannon's first period much resembled that of game one, as the Golden Knights leapt out to a 9-3 lead after eight minutes. Both senior (Farley & Fehr) opening the scoring in the first two minutes, and Gannon scored four of the first five goals of the game. 

  • Depth Scoring – 13 different Golden Knights had at least a point in the game. Fehr led the way with seven points, a career high for a single game. Farley also had six points and five goals, while Claudio Orte Blanch had a half a dozen points and a hat trick.  

  • Other Contributions - Emma O'Gorman (Johannesburg, South Africa/St Stithians College) scored three times ... Phoebe Puacz (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) added two goals and two helpers ... Brigid Carmody (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) scored and secured four points. 

  • Senior Day– Gannon honored seniors Kerstyn Farley (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona) and Molly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) as part of Senior Day prior to the game. Both players have made important contributions to the Gannon women's water polo program during their career on campus.
