Golden Knights Earn Key Conference Win in Saturday Sweep

SALEM, WV - The Golden Knights picked up their first conference win of the season on Saturday, beating McKendree, 16-12, to improve to 1-3 in conference play this season. Gannon ended the day with a 19-7 win over Mercyhurst for a doubleheader sweep. 

Gannon took a 5-3 lead after the first period of game one and didn't relent the rest of the way. Freshman Maria Martinez (Barcelona, Spain/Jesuïtes Gràcia Col·legi Kostka) led the way with six goals in the win, while Claudia Orte Blanch (Madrid, Spain/IES Profesor Maximo Trueba) had a hat trick. Gannon outscored the Bearcats 9-5 in the first and fourth periods of the game. 

Game two was a first half clinic from Gannon. The Golden Knights would take a 9-1 lead the break, defeating Mercyhurst for the second time this season. 

 
THE KNIGHT CAP - GAME 1 

  • Fast Start- Gannon would start fast in the first period, outscoring McKendree 5-1 to begin the game and 5-3 in the period as a whole. Four different scorers scored the opening four goals for the Golden Knights.

  • Maria Strikes Again- The tremendous freshman season from Maria Martinez (Barcelona, Spain/JesuĂŻtes GrĂ cia Col·legi Kostka) continued on Saturday. She would pot six goals in the win to lead all scorers, adding four assists for ten points. 

  • Other Scorers – Claudia Orte Blanch (Madrid, Spain/IES Profesor Maximo Trueba) had a hat trick on five shots ... Emma O'Gorman (Johannesburg, South Africa/St Stithians College) also had three goals in the win ... Molly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) notched four points including three helpers ... Brigid Carmody (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) had a pair of goals.

THE KNIGHT CAP - GAME 2 

  • Early Barrage - Gannon's first period much resembled that of game one, as the Golden Knights lept out to a 4-0 lead after eight minutes as Gannon scored the first five goals of the game. 

  • Depth Scoring – 11 different Golden Knights had at least a point in the game and four players recorded a hat trick: Martinez, Fehr, Orte Blanch, and Carissa Jones (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny). 

  • Other Contributions - Izabella Trunzo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) made six saves in net in the win ... Martinez ld the way with six points ... Carmody, O'Gorman and Phoebe Puacz (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley) had two goals each.
