Golden Knights Drop a Pair of Close Games on Tuesday

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Gannon softball team dropped a pair of contests on a sunny day in Florida on Tuesday, falling to 2-4 on the season. In both instances they were done in by one inning while dropping a 5-2 decision to Davenport, followed by a 3-2 loss in eight innings to Holy Family. The Golden Knights are participating in The Spring Games at the Diamondplex Softball Complex.

Head coach Michelle Wiley's squad will get some much-needed rest after playing six games in the last three days, having Wednesday off. They return to action Thursday, playing Charleston(WV) at 10:00 a.m. and Bridgeport at 12:15 p.m.

DAVENPORT 5, GANNON 2
The Golden Knights were limited to four hits while dropping to 2-3 on the young season. Davenport won its third straight game, as the Panthers broke open a tight game with four runs in the top of the fifth inning. Up until that point Rebecca Tatone (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) had limited Davenport to just one run, that coming on a second-inning home run by Alexis Koza. The Panthers would send two more balls out of the park in the fifth inning to account three runs and score an unearned run later in the inning. Gannon had just one runner reach second in the first six innings off Emma Miller (4-1) before pushing across a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out freshman Brenna Cassidy (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) walked. The inning remained alive with two outs as Natalie Mallozzi reached on an error. Katie Sidare (Rochester, N.Y./Victor Central) followed with a double to center to drive in Cassidy and Mallozzi. A groundout ended the game. Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau), Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford), and Mackenzie Ming (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) added singles for the Golden Knights.

HOLY FAMILY 3, GANNON 2 – 8 innings
Gannon was four outs away from a win when Emma Clayborne hit a two-run homer to right to tie the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Gannon went three-up, three-down in the top of the seventh, and Holy Family managed a single in the bottom of the frame. With the international tiebreaker in effect starting in the eighth inning, Gannon failed to advance the runner. The Tigers scored immediately on Abigail Smith's single to left center to end the game. Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) was the hard-luck loser, falling to 0-3. She allowed seven hits and a walk while striking out eight. Holy Family's Makenna Patterson limited Gannon to three hits – doubles by Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) and Megan Dietrick (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and a single by Rebecca Tatone (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe). The Golden Knights immediately took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Dietrick led off the game with a double and Nicole bush reached on an error while attempting to bunt Dietrick over to third. Dietrick scored on the play, and Bush eventually scored when she stole third and came around on an errant throw by the catcher.
