ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon Acrobatics & Tumbling team will face three teams ranked in the top five of the NCATA national rankings during its 2022 spring break trip, which begins tonight in Azusa, California with a tri-meet against the second-ranked Cougars of Azusa Pacific and the fifth-ranked Sharks of Hawaii Pacific.
Â
The meet is set for 9 p.m. ET (6 p.m. PT) at APU's Felix Events Center. This marks Gannon's second trip to Azusa Pacific, with the first coming back in 2014 when the Knights dropped a national tournament quarterfinal against host APU during Gannon's inaugural NCATA campaign. APU holds a 2-0 record all-time against Gannon, as the Cougars also topped Gannon during a tri-meet at Fairmont State back in 2016. Gannon is also 0-2 all-time against Hawaii Pacific, as the two programs competed in 2017 and 2020. Both meets took place in Honolulu.
Â
Gannon enters the meet with a 3-0 record, including wins over No. 4 Quinnipiac (266.955-262.235) and No. 8 Fairmont State (267.745-259.220) already this season. Azusa Pacific and Hawaii Pacific competed just two weeks ago in Honolulu, with the Cougars picking up a 281.870-272.800 victory over the Sharks.
Â
In Gannon's last outing against Fairmont State back on Feb. 18 at the Highmark Events Center, the Knights topped the Falcons in 15 of 19 heats and also won five of the six events. Gannon's performance also included season highs in 15 of 19 heats and included 10 scores of 9.50 or higher.
Â
Gannon's performance against Fairmont State was highlighted by a 9.90 in the compulsory pyramid and synchronized pyramid. The Knights also turned in a 9.85 in the inversion pyramid, a 9.80 in the compulsory toss, and a pair of 9.75 scores in the open toss and open tumbling pass.
Â
The win over Fairmont State was Gannon's ninth in a row, with the Knight's streak dating back to March 6, 2020 (at Hawaii Pacific).
Â
In Gannon's season-opening win over fourth-ranked Quinnipiac and East Stroudsburg during a tri-meet, the Knights won five events and 10 heats to earn the road victory. The Knights' performance was highlighted by a 29.30 out of 30.0 in the pyramid event, which included a meet-high 9.80 in the inversion pyramid heat. Gannon also tallied a pair of 9.75 scores in the sync and open pyramids and recorded a 9.70 out of 9.90 in the open toss heat.
Â
Following Gannon's season-opening sweep, sophomore
Ali Price (New Paris, Pa./Chestnut Ridge) earned NCATA Athlete of the Week honorable mention, while
Abbie Hoffman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) earned NCATA Specialist of the Week honorable mention.
Â
Following tonight's tri-meet, Gannon will remain out west to compete against No. 3 Oregon on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET at Mathew Knight Arena in Eugene.
