UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Gannon sent 19 wrestlers to the John Carroll Open on Sunday and finished the day with one first-place finish and three runner-up finishes in individual bracket competition.
Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) won his bracket at 174 pounds, while
Parker Loera (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park),
Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) and
Gehrig Hutchison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) each advanced to the finals.
At 174 pounds,
Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) highlighted Gannon's day by winning his weight classes' gold bracket. After receiving a first-round bye, Casilio won by decision in the quarterfinals and semifinals to advance to the first-place match. In the first-place match, Casilio topped Central Michian's Cody Brenner with a takedown in overtime to earn the sudden victory (3-1).
In the 141-pound blue bracket, Gannon's
Parker Loera (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) finished runner up after a 2-1 day. He won by decision in the quarterfinals and earned a sudden victory in the semifinals to advance to the finals. David Miller from Baldwin Wallace won the bracket with a medical-forfeit victory.
At 157 pounds,
Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) advanced to the first-place match in the gold bracket. He went 3-1 on the day, winning a trio of bouts by decision to earn a spot in the bracket final. Central Michigan's Trenton Wachter won by a 7-1 decision to take first place in the bracket.
Gehrig Hutchison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) also took runner-up in the 197-pound gold bracket to give the Golden Knights their fourth placewinner. After receiving a first-round bye, Hutchison won by first-round fall in the quarterfinals and earned a 7-0 decision in the semifinals. He fell to Alderson Broaddus' Gino Sita in the first-place match, dropping a 5-2 decision.
Gannon men's wrestling will now prepare for the NCAA Division II Super Regional on Saturday, Feb. 26 hosted by Pitt-Johnstown.
