Golden Knights Put Big Scare into Division I Buffalo Before Falling 25-16

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Gannon men's wrestling team had never defeated the University at Buffalo in ten previous meetings, and while the Golden Knights didn't prevail on Friday night at Alumni Arena, they certainly put a scare into the Division I Bulls. The Golden Knights at one point led 16-0 but Buffalo dominated the upper weights and ultimately came away with a 25-16 win.

The dual was the first of the young season for head coach Don Henry's team while Buffalo improved to 3-6, with four of the losses to nationally-ranked teams. Gannon came in ranked ninth in the latest NWCA Division II rankings which were released earlier today.

Gannon would win the first four bouts, beginning with the debut of Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) at 125 lbs. The transfer from Division I Franklin & Marshall captured a 7-2 decision over Patrick Adams in his first match as a Golden Knight. The lead grew to 9-0 as Chase McLaughlin (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area) improved to 5-3 with a fall at 1:12 over Tommy Maddux at 133 lbs.

Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) followed with an 11-2 major decision over Jack Marlow at 141 lbs. The redshirt sophomore was making his first appearance of the year.
Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander), who moved up to third in Division II at 149 lbs. in today's rankings took to the mat next. The graduate student posted a workmanlike 8-1 decision over Kaleb Burgess to improve to 9-2 on the season.

The decision gave Gannon a 16-0 advantage before Buffalo began its comeback. The Bulls would win the final six bouts, beginning with the feature match of the night as fifth-ranked Dom Means (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) squared off against No. 23 Michael Petite. Means gave the two-time Division I national qualifier all he could handle before dropping a 10-9 decision. The redshirt senior is now 8-2.

Three of the next four wins for UB came via bonus points as the Bulls pulled ahead 22-16 on a fall by Eli Sherren at 197 lbs.  Two of the final four losses came by a point, with Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) dropping a 3-2 decision in sudden victory at 174 lbs. and Eli Reese (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) losing 4-3 at heavyweight.

Gannon returns to action on Saturday, December 10 hosting Lake Erie at 2:00 p.m. at the Recreation and Wellness Center.
