INDIANAPOLIS –
Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander) claimed a second-place finish on Sunday to lead Gannon wrestlers at the Midwest Classic on the campus of the University of Indianapolis.
Young, a 149-pounder, was one of two GU wrestlers remaining in contention going into the second day of the tournament.
Dom Means (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) was also a semifinalist at 157 pounds before finishing in fifth place.
Their efforts helped Gannon place 17th in the prestigious tournament featuring 43 Division II teams.
Young, who placed sixth at 157 in the event in 2021, advanced to the 149-pound championship match on Sunday with a 4-3 win over Brik Filippo of Central Oklahoma.
Young then faced top-seeded Jacob Ealy of Pitt-Johnstown in the title match. Ealy emerged with a 4-2 victory as Young settled for second place.
Young finished the tourney with a 4-1 record as he improved to 14-3 overall.
Means was attempting to win a Midwest Classic title for the second consecutive year. He won the 149-pound title in 2021.
He went 4-0 on Saturday to advance to Sunday's semifinals where he faced to top-seeded Noah Hermosillo of Adams State. Hermosillo, a 2021 national champion at 149 pounds, beat Means 8-3 Sunday, sending him into the consolations.
After an 18-11 loss to Tiffin's Casey Barnett in the consolations, Means salvaged fifth place with an impressive 8-3 win over Pitt-Johnstown's No. 2-seeded Nate Smith. Means is now 14-4 on the season.
All seven of Gannon's other wrestlers entered in the tourney were eliminated on Saturday.
