No. 9 Gannon Impressive in Handing No. 19 Lake Erie a 27-12 Defeat

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's wrestling team picked up its first dual in impressive fashion on Saturday after at the Recreation and Wellness Center, handing 19th-ranked Lake Erie a 27-12 defeat. The Golden Knights came into the dual tied for ninth in the latest NWCA Division II Top 25. Gannon is now 1-1, while Lake Erie, a 19-15 winner over No. 18 Mercyhurst on Friday night, is 6-2.

Gannon would win seven of the first eight bouts while picking up a pair of wins from wrestlers making their debuts in the lineup. The Golden Knights also prevailed despite missing three key wrestlers in the lineup.

The Golden Knights jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead with decisions at 125 and 133 lbs. Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) improved to 2-0 with a 5-0 decision over Jacob Johnson, posting takedowns in the first and third periods. Chase McLaughlin (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area) followed with possibly the biggest won of his career as he outlasted Ryan Wehner 3-1 in sudden victory. Wehner was ranked 14th according to The Open Mat but it was McLaughlin with the winning takedown 47 seconds into overtime to improve to 6-3.

The two teams traded falls in the next two matches. Sixth-ranked Christian Small (7-0) and Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) (1-1) battled for most of their 141 lb. bout. Small held a 4-0 lead when he pinned Ryan at the 6:48 mark.

Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander) reciprocated with a dominating performance worthy of his third-place ranking at 149 lbs. The graduate student improved to 10-2 with the fall over Brady O'Connor at 5:32. He was on the verge of winning by technical fall when he caught O'Connor and flattened him for the extra point.

The marquis match of the evening occurred at 157 lbs. with Dom Means (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), ranked fifth by the NWCA, opposing Jack Haskin, who came in at 7-0 and was ranked 14th by The Open Mat. The bout lived up to its hype, with Means improving to 9-2 with a 6-4 decision. Means registered a takedown in the first two periods for a 4-2 lead. He opened the third with an escape, but Haskin's takedown with just under a minute remaining closed the gap to 5-4. Means would quickly escape and hold off Haskins down the stretch.

Ethan Richner (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High) (2-1), a redshirt freshman transfer from South Dakota State made his debut in the Gannon lineup at 165 lbs. and came away with an impressive 4-1 decision over Jacob Potok (6-2). Richner's first period takedown was the lone score in the first two periods. Potok, ranked 20th by The Open Mat, cut the deficit to 2-1 with an escape, but Richner clinched the upset with a takedown with 48 seconds remaining.

Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) (3-1) was awarded a forfeit win at 174 lbs. before Cole Hivnor (Painesville, Ohio/Lake Catholic) took the mat for the first time at 184 lbs. The freshman transfer from Pittsburgh was equally impressive in his first appearance as a Golden Knight. He won a 4-0 decision over Jordan Barnett thanks to a takedown a minute into the match, plus an escape and riding time point. Hivnor redshirted at Pitt a year ago.

Lake Erie claimed a pair of decisions at 197 lbs. and heavyweight to close out the match. Bryan Clouse jumped out to a 7-0 lead then had to hold off Eddie Farrell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) (0-4), who rallied to within 7-5 before losing 8-5. An entertaining heavyweight match saw Eli Reese (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) (4-3) go back and forth with Honour Kline. The two entered the third period tied at 6-6 and Kline recorded an escape while Reese had riding time to send the bout into overtime. Kline won 9-7 on a takedown 24 seconds into the extra session.

Gannon returns to action on Saturday, December 17 and Sunday, December 18 in the Midwest Classic.
