Golden Knights Look for Another Strong Showing at Ohio Collegiate Open

ERIE, Pa. – Week number two of the wrestling season finds the Gannon men's wrestling team competing in the Ohio Collegiate Open on Sunday, November 13. Case Western Reserve University is hosting the event at the Veale Center. Wrestling gets underway at 10:00 a.m.

Head coach Don Henry's team, which is ranked 15th in the NWCA Division II Preseason Top 25, debuted a week ago in the Mount Union Invitational. A total of 29 Golden Knights competed, with 19 placing. Gannon finished first in the team standings with nine teams competing.  

Dom Means (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and Joey Petrella (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) captured first place at 157 and 184 lbs., respectively, with four Golden Knights finishing second/ Means went 5-0 on the day. The redshirt senior is a returning national qualifier and former All-American. He opened with back-to-back pins before recording a major decision in the quarterfinals and a decision in the semifinals. Means faced a familiar wrestler in the finals as he edged Gannon junior Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) 3-2 in the championship match. Coreno was 4-1, winning by two pins, then by two decisions to advance to the finals.

On the way to the 184 lb. title, Petrella won by a 15-0 technical fall, a forfeit, and a 13-1 major decision. He then pulled out a 3-0 decision over Ohio Northern's Gavin Layman in the title match. Petrella was also a national qualifier in 2021-22.

In addition to Coreno, Gannon's other second-place finishers were Chase McLaughlin (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area) (133 lbs.), Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander) (149 lbs.), and Christian Scheller (Saxonburg, Pa./Mars) (174 lbs.). McLaughlin advanced to the 133 finals with a fall and two decisions. He then had a dogfight with SUNY-Brockport's Matt Caccamise before dropping a 7-6 decision.

Young, a returning National qualifier and a former All-American, turned in a fall, technical fall, and another fall to reach the 149-pound semifinals. He shut out West Liberty's Jacob Simpson 5-0 to claim a finals berth.  SUNY Brockport's Eli Sims then topped Young 8-4 in the title match.

Scheller went 3-1 at 174 lbs. on the way to a runner-up finish. He was dominant in his first three matches, claiming two technical falls and a fall. However, he lost by fall to Mount Union's David Reinhart in the finals and settled for second place.

While injuries and illness have impacted the roster early in the season, Henry expects to send out the following wrestlers at the Ohio Collegiate Open:
