JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Gannon men's wrestling took a contingent of "B" team wrestlers to the Jamestown Open in New York on Sunday and finished the day with six placewinners at the event, including first-place finishes by
James Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) (141 lbs.) and
Robert Boley (Concord Township, Ohio/Lake Catholic) (157 lbs.) to highlight the teams performance.
Caden Wendling (Brook Park, Ohio/Berea-Midpark) also finished runner up in the 165-pound bracket.
In addition to the trio of top finishers, Gannon's
Trent Tidball (Meadville, Pa./Meadville Area), a midyear transfer who made his debut for the Knights today, finished fourth at 197 lbs,
Caleb Chaves (Odenton, Md./Arundel) finished fifth at 141 lbs., and
Constantine Gehring (Owego, N.Y./Binghamton) took sixth in the 141-pound bracket.
Ryan went 5-0 for the Knights on Sunday, recording three tech falls and two falls on his way to the first-place finish in the 141-pound bracket. In the 157-pound bracket, Boley received a first-round bye before earning a pair of major decision to take first-place in the weight class. Boley advanced in the semifinals as a result of a medical forfeit by his opponent. His major decisions came in the quarterfinals and finals.
Wendling cruised to a pair of technical falls in the opening round and quarterfinals of the 165-poound bracket, before advancing to the finals with a first-round fall in the semifinals. He settled for second-place after a medical withdraw in the finals.
Tidball, a transfer from Kent State, went 4-2 on the day and advanced to the third-place match following four-consecutive decision victories. Both of his setbacks on Sunday came against Thiel's Jared Curcio. He fell in the opening round by a 4-0 decision against Curcio, before dropping the championship bout with a second-round fall against Curcio in the rematch.
Chaves went 4-2 in the 141-bracket, winning two bouts by decision, one by major decision and one by technical fall. Gehring also placed for the Knights at 141-pounds, going 2-3 on the day. He won his first two bouts by fall and decision before dropping three in a row.
