Late Wins Propel Gannon B Team to 23-18 Win over Lake Erie

ERIE, Pa. – Marques McClorin (Meadville, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Deven Abbott (Erie, Pa./Collegiate Academy (Erie)) posted come-from-behind decisions as the Gannon B Team rallied for a 23-18 win over Lake Erie on Thursday night at the Hammermill Center.

The dual got underway at heavyweight, with Gehrig Hutchison (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) giving Gannon a 3-0 lead with a 3-1 decision in sudden victory over Paul Scaramuzzino. That set the stage for a back-and-forth dual.

With the knowledge that the teams would exchange forfeits at 184 and 197 lbs., the match came down to the 165 and 174 lb. bouts. The Storm gained a 12-11 lead heading into those last two matches with a sudden victory decision at 157 lbs.

McClorin gave the lead back to the Golden Knights with an exciting 10-4 decision over Nick Burgard at 165 lbs. The freshman from nearby Cathedral Prep trailed 4-3 entering the final period. An escape knotted the match at 4-4. Then in the final thirty seconds he took control with a takedown and four nearfall points.

That left Deven Abbott (Erie, Pa./Collegiate Academy (Erie)) needing a win to preserve Gannon's 14-12 lead. The junior, also a local student-athlete who wrestled at Erie High School, trailed 3-1 late in the third period following a takedown by Jaron Patterson. An escape narrowed it to 3-2, and Abbott registered the winning takedown in the final 15 seconds. The 4-3 decision gave Gannon the 23-18 victory.

Gannon won five of the eight bouts, and then followed with a split of the four exhibition matches that followed. The Golden Knights picked up two bonus point wins. Aseel Almudhala (Dearborn, Mich./Fordson) won an 18-9 major decision over Blake Sheppard at 133 lbs. At 149 lbs., Hayden Butterfield (Erie, Pa./McDowell) posted a 17-3 major decision over Brady O'Connor.

Gannon will compete on Saturday in the Shippensburg Duals, facing American International, Shippensburg, and Belmont Abbey.
