No. 6 Gannon Wins Fourth Dual in a Row with Dominant Win over Short-Handed East Stroudsburg

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's wrestling team won its fourth straight dual and remained undefeated with a 52-0 triumph over a game but short-handed East Stroudsburg squad on Sunday afternoon at the Hammermill Center. The sixth-ranked Golden Knights are now 4-2 overall and 3-0 in PSAC duals.

The match had a unique twist to it, with both the men's and women's teams from Gannon and ESU wrestling at the same time on separate mats. The women also came away victorious with a 34-13 victory. After numerous postponements due to COVID, the East Stroudsburg men's team needed contests. With the need to make up a dual with Mercyhurst, part of the ESU team went to Mercyhurst for a dual at the same time.

The end result was four forfeit wins for Gannon leaving little doubt to the outcome. But the Golden Knights came away with wins in the remaining six bouts, with three falls and a major decision. The shutout was the first since a 46-0 win over Long Island in the first dual of the 2019-20 season.

After Jacob Dunlop (Rostraver Township, Pa./Belle Vernon) picked up a forfeit win at 125 lbs. to start the match, Aseel Almudhala (Dearborn, Mich./Fordson) improved to 6-7 with a 10-2 major decision over Carlens Lapaix at 133 lbs. Almudhala recorded four takedowns.

Austin Hertel (Rochester, N.Y./Hilton) and Dom Means (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) followed with decisions at 141 and 149 lbs., respectively. Hertel (7-4) used a pair of takedowns in the third period to full away for an 8-3 win over Brian Lombardi. It is his 60th career win.

Second-ranked Means was forced to go to sudden victory before claiming an 8-6 win over Bryce Parenti. Means, now 9-0, entered the third period trailing 5-2. An escape and takedown thirty seconds into the period knotted the score at 5-5. Means would ride Parenti out until Parenti worked his way free for the escape with four seconds to go. Means had over two minutes in riding time to make the score 6-6. He recorded the winning takedown 50 seconds into the extra session.

Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander) followed with a fall over Alejandro Leon at 1:43 as he improved to 13-7. Young had a pair of takedowns before flattening Leon.

After a forfeit at 165 lbs. for top-ranked Alex Farenchak (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside), tenth-ranked Joey Petrella (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) improved to 15-4 with a fall at 5:25 over Sergio Cespedes. After a tough loss against Mercyhurst on Wednesday, the freshman came out the aggressor and dominated the match. He had five takedowns and had a pair of four-point near fall moves. His final takedown actually gave him a technical fall, but he threw Leon to his back and moments later had the pin.

Gannon gained forfeit wins at 184 and 285 lbs. Joel Leise (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds), ranked third at 197 lbs., picked up his fifth fall of the year at 1:15 over Matt Richardson. Leise is now 7-0 after recording an early takedown before the cradle for the pin.

The teams also wrestled three exhibition matches. Dunlop moved up a weight class to record a pin for his 76th career win, while Caleb Adamowicz (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) also won by fall at 141 lbs. In another 141 lb. bout, Reece Vollmer won a 5-3 decision.

The Golden Knights face a big dual at Seton Hill on Wednesday, January 26. The match is a makeup of a dual originally set for December 8.
