PREVIEW: Knights Named Second Seed, Face California in PSAC Quarterfinals

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon softball team head into the PSAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed in the Western Division and will host No. 3 seed Cal U in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 5, at McConnell Family Stadium.  First pitch of Wednesday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. in Erie.
 
The winner will go on to play the winner of No. 1 Seton Hill – No. 4 Mercyhurst in the PSAC Semifinals.

GANNON TEAM NOTES
  • The Knights clinched their 10th consecutive PSAC Tournament Berth with victories over Pitt-Johnstown, taking the series 3-1 last weekend.
  • Gannon enters the tournament with a 23-9 PSAC record to earn the No. 2 seed, following Seton Hill at 25-7.
  • As a team, GU registers a 3.04 ERA with opponents limited to a .250 batting average which is the third lowest in the league. The Golden Knights are hitting .270 with 47 doubles, four triples and rank third in the conference with 39 total homers.
  • Three seniors lead the Knights offense with Maria Taliani (Cheswick, Pa./Deer Lakes) batting .374 followed by Kaity Stocker (Tipp City, Ohio/Tippecanoe) (.339) and Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) (.308).  Stocker ranks sixth in the PSAC with a .743 slugging-percentage totaling 13 home runs on the season which is the third most in conference.
  • Gannon ranks third in the PSAC with a .964 fielding percentage, turning 11 double plays this season.
  • Four pitchers have made appearances in the circle for the Knights this season. Rebecca Tatone (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) holds a team-low 2.40 ERA to lead in the circle while Kennedy DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) registers a team-high 12 wins and 97 strikeouts to stand fifth in the conference.
  • Stocker continues to write her name all over the record books as the senior set a new program record 36 career home runs after breaking the previous record (28) set by Joanna Fergus (2003-06).  She currently ranks third in walks (65) and eighth in RBI (111) and total bases (245).
  • Two other Knights are writing their names in the books as Taliani follows closely behind Stocker with 32 career home runs while Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) ties sixth at 21.  With 11 doubles this season, Taliani moves up to third in the books with 44 career doubles tying former Knight Steph Christ (2004-07).  
  • Kristina DeMatteis (Boyers, Pa./Moniteau) leads the team with 10 stolen bases.
  • Under head coach Michelle Wiley, Gannon posts a 37-15 (.711) PSAC record and 64-37 (.633) overall since she took charge at the helm of the Knights program in 2018.
 
SCOUTING CAL U
  • Due to the CoVID-19 pandemic, Cal U sits 19-8 overall to enter as the No. 3 seed in the Western Division.
  • The Vulcans are batting .297 as a team led by Shayna Postler at .387.  Britney Wilson and Paige Wilson follow Postler at .365 and .361 with Paige Wilson recording a team-high 30 hits and 13 doubles.  
  • Cal U has a team 3.22 ERA which is the fourth lowest in the league.  Kaitlyn Leary posts a team-low 2.01 ERA allowing 34 runs (16 earned) through 55.2 innings.  Ellie Lobdell records a team-high eight wins in the circle with 60 strikeouts.
  • NFCA Hall of Fame head coach Rick Bertagnolli entered his 28th season this year and has led the Vulcans to a 900-330 overall record (.732).
  • Cal leads the all-time series against Gannon, 12-49.

  • Gannon and Cal U will play on Thursday, May 6, at McConnell Family Stadium at 1 p.m.  if a third game is necessary.
  • The winner of Wednesday's quarterfinal doubleheader will face the winner from Seton-Hill-Mercyhurst on Sunday, May 9, in the PSAC Semifinals.
  • The winner of the PSAC Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA regional tournament running May 9-11.
