HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Farenchak's semifinal was one of a number of entertaining bouts on the day for Gannon. McKendree's Cory Peterson, who upset the top seed in Friday's quarterfinals, took a 3-1 lead, but Farenchak reversed to tie things up at the end of seven minutes. In sudden victory, Peterson took an excellent shot, but Farenchak countered, got in on a high single and converted for the winning takedown.
  • At 157, Young kept his thrilling action going Saturday. After putting top seed and finalist James Wimer of Findlay in precarious spots a couple times Friday, Young got the opening takedown and four nearfall points in the first period against Newberry's Will Evans. A reversal in the second sent Young to an 11-5 win in that consolation quarterfinal.
  • Young took the lead with a reversal to start the third in the consolation semis against second-seeded Dawson Combest of Indianapolis, but Combest snuck out and got the winning takedown with just 14 seconds left. In the fifth-place bout, Young couldn't find a finish to his counters, dropping a 9-3 decision to Central Oklahoma's Ty Lucas to finish sixth.
  • At 133, Dunlop was locked in a battle with seventh-seeded Tyler Kreith of Maryville in the consolation quarterfinals, getting the opening takedown 30 seconds in. An escape in the third gave Dunlop the 3-2 lead, but in a flurry of action, Kreith netted the winning takedown to push Dunlop to the seventh-place match.
  • In that one, Dunlop had a number of solid shots against Lindenwood's fourth-seeded Tanner Hitchcock, as the pair looked for the winning points tied 1-1 midway through the third. Hitchcock was the one who hit it, taking a reshot after Dunlop's attempt and converting for the winning margin.

EVENT NOTES
  • Farenchak is Gannon's first finalist since the 2010-11 season, when Zack McKendree finished second at 165. Farenchak makes it four Golden Knight finalists all-time, joining McKendree, 2002 runner-up Lyneil Mitchell and 2001 national champion Doug Joseph.
  • It's the first time since 2017 that the Golden Knights have a trio of All-Americans at the NCAA Championships.
  • Gannon appears headed to one of the best team finishes in program history. The Golden Knights sit in eighth place, and while that's the highest they can get, a tight race for the last few spots in the top 10 is shaping up, with five teams within five points of Gannon.

UP NEXT
  • Session 3 begins at 8 p.m. Eastern Saturday, when Farenchak will go for the 165-pound title.
