EVENT NOTES
  • Gannon will have three All-Americans after the first day of action at the NCAA wrestling championships Friday, as Farenchak is into the 165 semifinals, with Dunlop (133) and Young (157) still going in the consolations.
  • The Golden Knights sit eighth in the team standings out of 44 teams with at least one wrestler in attendance.
  • It's the first time since 2017 that Gannon has had a wrestler finish as an All-American at nationals. Farenchak, along with Nixon and Dom Means (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), were selected All-Americans last season after the national tournament was canceled.
  • Lenox started the tournament off with a bang, registering a fall in the first period of the first round to bring an end to the first bout at an NCAA wrestling tournament at any level since 2019.
  • The Knights went 4-1 in the first round, and had the flair for the dramatic along the way. In addition to Lenox's pin, Dunlop and Farenchak each surrendered the opening takedown before coming back to earn decisions. At 285, Nixon went to sudden victory before getting the winning takedown in sudden victory.
  • Farenchak has locked up a top-six placement, and will face McKendree's eighth-seeded Cory Peterson in the semis. Farenchak got a bit of revenge in the quarters, topping American International's JoJo Gonzalez in a rematch of the regional title bout.
  • After getting a bye into the quarterfinals, Young went right after top seed James Wimer of Findlay at 157, taking shots and looking for big moves. He was looking for another when he got turned for back points to make the 11-4 final look a bit more lopsided. Young will face Newberry's Will Evans in the consolation quarterfinals.
  • Dunlop made his opening-round 9-3 win look easy with three takedowns, but ran into third-seed Wesley Dawkins of Nebraska-Kearney in the quarters, who knocked him into the consolations with a 5-1 decision. Dunlop then made a first-period takedown stand up in the round of 12, yielding two escapes but getting one of his own for a 3-2 win. He'll take on Tyler Kreith of Maryville in the consolations quarterfinals.

UP NEXT
  • Session 2 begins at 1 p.m. Eastern Saturday. Gannon's three All-Americans will each wrestle at least two more bouts.
