Nine Golden Knights Win Their Pools at Journeymen Collegiate Classic

MANHEIM, Pa. – The Gannon men's wrestling competed against a strong field on Sunday in the Journeymen Collegiate Classic at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex. A total of 13 Golden Knights took to the mats against a field made up of largely Division I teams in the round robin style tournament. Nine grapplers took first place in their respective pools, along with one second place showing. The other three wrestlers finished third.

Returning All-Americans Jacob Dunlop (Rostraver Township, Pa./Belle Vernon), Nick Young (Batavia, N.Y./Alexander), and Alex Farenchak (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside) competed for the first time in 2021-22. All three posted 3-0 records, with Dunlop winning pool C at 125 lbs., Young the winner of pool C at 157 lbs., and Farenchak pool D of 165 lbs. Farenchak had two bonus point wins with a fall and a major decision, Dunlop had a technical fall and a major decision, and Young had a major decision. All three faced three Division I wrestlers.  

Freddie Nixon (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) continued his strong start at heavyweight with three wins by decision in pool D, all vs. Division I competition.  

Gannon had two pool winners at 149 lbs., with Hayden Butterfield (Erie, Pa./McDowell) (3-0) prevailing in pool F and Joel Huck (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf) (2-1) in pool G.  At 174 lbs., Joey Petrella (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) went 3-0 with a technical fall and major decision to win pool E, while Joel Leise (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds) was 3-0 with a fall at 197 lbs. He won pool C.

Head coach Don Henry's squad will return to the mat on Saturday, November 20 in the Findlay Open.
