RECAP
ERIE, Pa – The Gannon University men's soccer team (9-1 overall, 3-0 PSAC) rose two spots to a No. 15 ranking in this week's United Soccer Coaches Division II National Poll. The team looks for a sixth straight victory this Wednesday on the road at Seton Hill (6-3-1 overall, 3-0 PSAC) in a battle for first place in the West Division. Both teams have only allowed one goal in each of the last five matches. For the season, the Golden Knights and Griffins have allowed seven goals each—ranked first in the conference in that category amongst teams who have played more than six games.
Redshirt senior
Joe Knox (Gold Coast, Australia/The Southport School) was critical to Gannon's success last week in 1-0 victories over Slippery Rock and Pitt-Johnstown, scoring both goals and earning the PSAC West Division Athlete of the Week award. Knights goalkeeper
Maximiliano Rocco (Florence, S.C.) was also awarded PSAC West Division Defensive Athlete of the Week honors and has been one of the steadiest netminders in the entire conference, carrying the best goals-against-average (.698) and second-best save percentage (.870) into Wednesday's match.
Gannon dominated the 2019 season series between the two institutions, winning both matches by a combined total of 10-1. In 2018, though, Seton Hill ended the Golden Knights' season in the PSAC Quarterfinals after clinching a 5-4 penalty shootout victory. The Griffins have won four of their last five matches (versus Salem, Mercyhurst, Pitt-Johnstown and Cal U) by identical 3-0 scorelines. Another common opponent for Gannon and Seton Hill is the University of the District of Columbia, which both teams defeated 3-2.
Eleven different players have scored for the Griffins in 2021, led by the trio of Fletcher Amos, Anthony Panko, and Elias Vangen (who have each scored three goals.) Goalkeeper Bobby White has started nine matches, made 31 saves, and shut out four opponents--tying him with Rocco for the highest total in the PSAC.
Following Wednesday's action, a rivalry match at Mercyhurst (5-3-1 overall, 1-1-1 PSAC) is on tap for the Golden Knights on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 1:00 p.m.
