Women’s Water Polo Caps Season in WWPA Championships on Sunday; Fehr, Ruh Named to All-Tournament Team

  • The Short Story: Gannon came out determined, opening up an early 4-0 lead, but Cal State Easy Bay rattled off a 5-2 scoring run in the second quarter to take the lead before holding off the Lady Knights in the second half on Sunday in the 2019 WWPA Championships. Kelly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villia Maria) nabbed First Team All-Tournament honors while Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) picked up Second Team accolades at the conclusion of the tournament

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ruh, Fehr, Nicole Wiemken (Napoleon, Ohio /Napoleon) and Julia Kredinger (Erie, Pa./Villia Maria) lifted the Lady Knights in front 4-0 early with goals at 7:15, 5:59, 4:17 and 3:37 in the opening quarter. Fehr's goal was a five-meter shot, while Kredinger assisted on the Wiemken tally before scoring the Lady Knights' fourth goal off a feed from Sydney Fountain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos).
  • Cal State East bay responded with five of the next six goals to tie the game at five in the second. Fountain stopped a run of three straight Pioneer goals with a lob that landed just inside the left post at 2:28 in the second.
  • CSUEB posted two more goals, just 25 seconds apart at :56 and :31 in the second quarter to take a 7-6 lead. Ruh quickly tied the score in the second half, netting her second goal of the contest at the 3:49 mark in the third period. Fountain dropped in a powerplay marker with just under one minute to go in the third, but CSUEB scored a key goal with just 15 seconds left in the frame for a 9-8 advantage.
  • The late third quarter goal was one of four consecutive for the Pioneers in the second half. Fehr scored with just 1:14 remaining for the final marker of the game as Gannon fell 12-9.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Gannon posted its highest win total for a season since 2013. 
  • Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) made five saves in her final collegiate action as a Lady Knight. She finishes the 2019 season with 194 saves, the fifth most in program history for a single season. She also caps her Gannon career with 434 stops, a mark that ranks fourth in program history.
  • Vieira now holds two of the top seven single-season save campaigns in school history, ranking seventh with 174 stops in 2018.
  • Fehr (First Team) and Ruh (Second Team) were named to the 2019 WWPA All-Tournament team during the championship presentation following the tournament.
  • With eight goals in the tournament, Fehr was tied for fifth among WWPA Championship leaders. Fehr finished the 2019 season with 61 goals, the eighth most in program history or a single season.
  • Ruh enters her senior season with a chance to rewrite the record books. She sits eighth in goals (129), tied for tenth in assists (73) and eighth in sprint-off wins (25).
  • Wiemken concludes an impressive freshman season for the Lady Knights, finishing the year with 27 goals, 24 assists and 51 points.
  • UC San Diego won its seventh consecutive WWPA Championship on Sunday, defeating Fresno Pacific in the final game of the day. The Tritons are leaving the WWPA and moving to the NCAA DI Big West conference next season.
