Women’s Water Polo Faces Tough Foes to Open 2019 Harvard Invite on Saturday

  • The Short Story: In a tightly contested defensive struggle, Gannon brought a 5-2 second half deficit to within one late, but Toronto responded with an insurance tally with less than one minute remaining to pull ahead  and seal the one-goal win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 1-0 in the opening quarter, Gannon responded back with the game-tying goal from Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) at 6:26 in the first and Kelly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villia Maria) gave the Lady Knights a 2-1 lead just over one minute later at 5:15.
  • Toronto tied the score at two with under 60 seconds remaining in the first frame, and took control from there for a 5-2 edge with 3:57 left in the third quarter. Fehr countered with her second goal of the contest, trimming the Gannon deficit to 5-3. Nicole Wiemken (Napoleon, Ohio /Napoleon) added a tally 42 seconds later in the third as the Lady Knights surged to within one at 5-4.
  • Toronto built its cushion with an exclusion goal at :51 in the third for a 6-4 lead, and a tightly played fourth quarter saw no scoring until the final moments of the game. Sydney Fountain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) propelled Gannon back to a one-goal deficit with a strike with 1:04 remaining, but Toronto pushed its lead back to a pair of goals not even 30 seconds later. Wiemken fired home the final goal of the contest with 23 seconds remaining for the 7-6 final.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) made six saves in the morning matchup, including three big saves in the fourth quarter to keep Gannon within striking distance.
  • Wiemken recorded her third game of the season with multiple goals.
  • Seven goals against is tied for the fewest allowed in a game this season. Gannon allowed seven goals in a 12-7 win against Salem last weekend on February 24.

  • The Short Story: A quick start for a talented Bucknell squad was all it needed in a 15-6 win over Gannon as the Lady Knights capped day one of the 2019 Harvard Invite.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wiemken got Gannon on the board with the first goal of the contest for the Lady Knights, bringing them to within 2-1 of a fast-starting Bucknell team. The Bison answered with two more goals for a 4-1 lead, but Julia Kredinger (Erie, Pa./Villia Maria) got on the board near the end of the first quarter to make it a 4-2 game.
  • Bucknell scored three unanswered goals for a 7-2 edge before Fehr stopped the run with an even strength goal in the third.  Ruh scored to make it an 8-4 deficit for Gannon and the teams traded goals after that. Fehr scored again as Gannon trailed 9-5 before Bucknell rattled off five consecutive goals for a 14-5 edge. Ruh countered with a tally before Bucknell scored again in the fourth quarter for the 15-6 final.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Vieira made six saves in goal for Gannon.
  • Four different players scored a goal for Gannon, with Fehr and Ruh scoring two times each.
  • Wiemken led the way with three points, including two assists.
  • Bucknell led 7-2 at the half.
  • Bucknell is tied for 24th in the most recent Top 25 Poll with an opponent Gannon is scheduled to face tomorrow, California Baptist.
