Victory Eludes Gannon Baseball after Wild Comeback Against Millersville in PSAC Tournament Opener

THE RUNDOWN
  • Game One Score: Millersville 10, Gannon 9 (10 innings)
  • Records: Gannon (31-17), Millersville (32-17)
  • Location: Johnstown, Pa. – Point Stadium
  • The Short Story: The Gannon Baseball team rallied from a 7-0 deficit to take a 9-7 lead against Millersville on Thursday at Point Stadium in Johnstown, Pa. The Golden Knights couldn't hang on, however, falling 10-9 in extra innings at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Millersville began the game scoring seven unanswered runs against the Golden Knights.
  • The Marauders tallied three of those runs in the first inning as they strung together four hits, capped off by a Luke Trainer RBI-double.
  • Millersville made the score 6-0 after Dominic Hardaway crushed a two-run home run over the 410-foot sign in dead center field in the fifth inning.
  • The Marauders lead was 7-0 before Gannon began its comeback. Mike Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) led off the seventh inning with a single before Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) doubled him home for the first GU run.
  • Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) both singled and Gannon tallied its second run.
  • Gannon loaded the bases after Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) singled and Cody Callaway (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) stepped to the plate. He worked a four-pitch walk that forced in Cardy.
  • The Golden Knights' fourth and final run of the inning came by way of a Gregory Nicolia (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) single, plating Cox. Gannon cut the deficit to three, 7-4.
  • Gannon was back on the attack in the eighth inning. GU loaded the bases with Mori coming to the plate. Mori worked another bases loaded walk for Gannon, scoring Cardy.
  • Callaway pulled the Golden Knights all the way back to even with a double down the line that scored Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) and Cox. 
  • Gannon took its first lead when Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) hit an infield single that allowed Mori to score. The Golden Knights went up 8-7.
  • The Golden Knights finished off a five-run inning with a Nicolia bunt single, scoring Callaway. Gannon led 9-7 after eight innings.
  • Millersville wasn't going down without a fight in the bottom of the ninth. The Marauders' Jimmy Cain hit two-RBI single that knotted the game back up at nine runs apiece.
  • The game went to the 10th inning where Millersville had two opportunities to win it. Eric Callahan stood on third base with only one out when Ted Williams hit a ball to third base. Gannon's Callaway threw home and got Callahan at the plate for out number two.
  • With Williams on first, Cole Friese hit a triple down the right field line that scored Williams for the walk-off victory. Millersville took the game, 10-9.
     
GAME NOTES
  • Cox led the Golden Knights with three hits (3-for-6), scoring two runs and driving in one RBI.
  • Millersville outhit Gannon, 16-12.
  • Eight Golden Knights recorded hits and each of the top seven batters in the lineup scored a run.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • GU was ranked fifth in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional rankings. The top seven teams at season's end advance to the NCAA tournament.
  • Millersville was ranked second in the same regional rankings.
  • Gannon played in its third extra-innings game of the season (2-1). The Golden Knights also fell to 3-6 in one-run games.
  • The four-plus hour game (4:04) was the longest of the season, besting a 3:33 game at Mercyhurst on Apr. 27. 
  • Gannon drops to 0-2 against Millersville since joining the conference in 2009. Both games have been decided by one run.
     
UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns to action at the PSAC tournament on Thursday, May 10, against the loser of the Mercyhurst/Shippensburg game.
  • The elimination game is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. start time.
