Gannon Women's Water Polo Goes Undefeated on Opening Day of McKendree Tournament

The Short Story: Trailing 5-4 at halftime, the Gannon women's water polo team rallied to score eight of the next nine goals to defeat Monmouth College, 12-6, Saturday afternoon at the McKendree Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Becca Dabrowski put Monmouth on the board first just 1:50 into the contest.
The Lady Knights responded with three unanswered goals by Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County), Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School).
Monmouth's Brittany Lira tallied three straight goals to take back the lead, 4-3.
Cooney tied it up with 40 ticks left in the first quarter.
Lira scored the only goal of the second quarter with 4:12 remaining to give Monmouth a 5-4 halftime lead.
Gannon started to rally in the third period by scoring three straight goals, two by Francesca Williamson (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) and one by Barr to take a 7-5 lead.
Dabrowski opened the fourth quarter with her second goal of the game.
The Lady Knights went on to score the next five goals to win, 12-6.

GAME NOTES

Ruh finished the game with two goals and four assists for six points.
Cooney and Williamson had five points apiece.
Barr made a team-high six saves.
Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) made a season-high 12 saves in the cage.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lady Knights jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first quarter thanks to two goals apiece from Ruh and Cooney. Grace Villano (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) scored a goal with 37 ticks left in the first period.
McKendree's Brianna Mulley opened the second quarter with her second goal of the game, but Gannon closed out the first half with back-to-back goals from Sydney Fountain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) and Ruh to take a 7-3 lead at the break.
The Bearcats came back from halftime and scored two unanswered goals to cut it to 7-5.
Gannon responded with a three-goal run with two goals coming from Cooney and another from Barr. Mulley closed out the third quarter with her fourth goal of the contest to cut McKendree's deficit to four-goals.
McKendree outscored Gannon 3-2 in the final period, but the Lady Knights held on for their first conference victory of the spring.

GAME NOTES

Saturday was the WWPA-opener for the Lady Knights.
Cooney scored a season-high six goals in the win.
Ruh finished with three goals and two assists.
Barr recorded four points on one goal and three assists. She also had a team-high three steals.
Viera picked up her sixth win of the season. She made nine saves.
