Gannon Women’s Water Polo Falls to McKendree in WWPA Championships, 15-12

  • The Short Story: The No. 7 Gannon women's water polo team lost to No. 8 McKendree by a score of 15-12 in the seventh-place match at the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships Sunday morning. Gannon finished the season with a 7-12 overall record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Tied 3-3 midway through the first quarter, McKendree went on a five-goal run to take an 8-3 advantage. The Lady Knights and the Bearcats closed out the first half by exchanging goals. McKendree led 9-4 at halftime. Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) had two goals in the first half, while Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Francesca Williamson (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) had one apiece.
  • Gannon outscored McKendree in the third quarter, 4-3, to cut it to 12-8.
  • The Lady Knights cut their deficit to 14-12 in the fourth quarter, but McKendree scored once more in the final seconds to lock up the three-goal win.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Ruh finished the game with five goals and two assists.
  • Cooney had three goals, while Williamson had two.
  • Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School) had a game-high four steals, while also recording two assists and one goal.
  • Sydney Fountain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) recorded one goal and two assists.
  • Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) made 10 saves in goal.
  • Gannon and McKendree were even in shots, recording 34 apiece.
  • The Lady Knights won all four sprint-offs.

  • Cooney was named to the All-Tournament Second Team. 
  • Cooney finishes her career with 192 goals, which tabs her at fifth in program history.
  • Barr wraps up her four-year career with 11 goals, which is 10th all-time at Gannon.
  • Vieira finished her junior season with 174 saves, which brings her career save total to 257, ranking sixth in the Gannon record books.
