The Short Story: The No. 7 Gannon women's water polo lost to No. 3 Mercyhurst in the consolation bracket of the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) helped Gannon get out to a two-goal lead in the first quarter with back-to-back goals.
Cooney scored the first goal of the second period, but Mercyhurst's Maddie Nye cut it to 3-1 just before halftime.
Coming back from the break, the Lakers outscored the Lady Knights 3-2 in the third quarter. Francesca Williamson (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) and Lizzie Rodriguez (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored goals for Gannon.
The Lakers fought back from a 5-4 deficit with five-unanswered fourth period goals to win, 9-5.

GAME NOTES

Cooney led Gannon with three goals.
Williamson and Rodriguez had one goal apiece.
Williamson had a team-high three steals.
Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) had seven saves in goal.
