  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's water polo team claimed a Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) victory from McKendree Saturday morning at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion pool, 15-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • McKendree took an early one-goal lead in the first quarter on a goal by Sabrina Sherrin, but the Lady Knights came out strong in the second quarter with eight straight goals to take an 8-1 halftime lead. Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) scored four goals, while Francesca Williamson (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) and Sydney Fountain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) scored a pair each.
  • The Lady Knights kept the momentum in the second half with three straight third-quarter goals, two from Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School) and one from Ruh. McKendree netted back-to-back goals to cut it to 11-3. Gannon and McKendree closed out the quarter with one more goal apiece to make it 12-4 after three periods of action.
  • Gannon scored three consecutive goals to start the fourth quarter. Emily Westlove found the back of the net once more for the Bearcats to bring the final score to 15-5.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Ruh scored a career-high seven goals.
  • Barr had three goals, while Fountain and Williamson finished with two apiece.
  • Ruh also had a team-high four steals, while Williamson had three.  
  • Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) made a career-high 14 saves.

  • The Lady Knights held a 2-0 lead at halftime thanks to individual goals from Williamson and Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy).
  • Mercyhurst scored back-to-back goals in the third period to tie things up.
  • The Lakers took a one-goal lead with 5:35 remaining in the game on Nicki Borella's lone goal of the contest. Erin Glass put Mercyhurst up two goals with 3:37 on the clock.
  • Cooney had one last goal for the Lady Knights with 27 ticks remaining.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Cooney led Gannon with two goals.
  • Vieira made 13 saves in the cage on 26 shots.
  • Saturday's three goals is a season-low for Gannon.
  • Prior to the game, Gannon and Mercyhurst honored their senior class.
