Gannon Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader to Earn Series Split Against Pitt-Johnstown

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Gannon Baseball team swept the doubleheader at Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday, 11-6, 15-3, to earn the series split against the Mountain Cats.
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER  
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • Gannon put a tally on the board first with a single run in the second inning. Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) hit a single up the middle that pushed Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) across the plate. Gannon led, 1-0.
  • The Golden Knights caught fire in the fourth inning. Gannon sent 11 batters to the plate in a six-run inning. Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) highlighted the inning with a two-run bomb, also scoring Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge). The Golden Knights jumped out to a 7-0 lead.
  • Pitt-Johnstown came back with four unanswered runs with one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth, closing the gap to within 7-4.
  • Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) helped push the lead back out to five, 9-4, as he tripled with two aboard in the top of the seventh. Cardy also scored in the next at-bat on a wild pitch.
  • All in total, Gannon scored four in the frame, going up, 11-4.
  • Pitt-Johnstown tallied two in the last of the seventh but it wasn't enough as Gannon pulled out an 11-6 victory.
     
GAME NOTES – GAME ONE
  • Gannon's Mori belted his third home run of the season. He was 2-for-4 in the game with a run scored and three RBIs.
  • Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) picked up the pitching victory, tossing 5 2/3 innings of nine-hit, four-run baseball. Only three of the four runs were earned. Judy also struck out seven while walking three.
  • Cardy picked up his second triple of the season. He is tied with Cox for the team lead in that category.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Judy picked up his third victory on the mound this season, tying for the team lead. Judy also has a team-leading three saves. He has a 3.71 ERA in 11 appearances this season, five starts.
  • UPJ's Shirk led all of NCAA Division II baseball coming into Saturday's games with a .463 batting average.
     
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Gannon throttled Pitt-Johnstown in game two. The Golden Knights took an early lead with a run in the first inning. With Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) on third base and one out, Cardy lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Oruch.
  • The Golden Knights took a 4-0 lead in the second inning after recording singles from Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler), Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and an RBI-fielder's choice from Mike Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls).
  • Gannon was back on the attack in the fifth inning. Three-straight singles to begin the inning from Oruch, Cardy and Cox had Gannon in business. Gannon sent 12 to the plate in the inning, scoring eight runs in the process. GU held a 12-0 lead after five innings.
  • Pitt-Johnstown scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Jack Shirk ripped a double with Nemo Trexler on second base. Gannon continued to lead, 12-1.
  • Quiceno led off the sixth inning getting hit by a 1-1 pitch. Mori followed with a single and Steighner loaded the bases with a walk.
  • Charles benack came to the plate and belted a two-RBI single, making the score, 14-1.
  • Oruch batted home Gannon's 15th and final run to finish off the sixth inning. Steighner scored on the play as Gannon was in control, 15-1.
  • Pitt-Johnstown scored a pair in the bottom of the sixth but it wasn't enough as Gannon cruised to the 15-3 victory.
     
GAME NOTES – GAME TWO
  • Gannon and Pitt-Johnstown combined for 22 hits, none for extra bases. Each team had 11 in the game.
  • Oruch tallied a 3-for-3 game with two runs scored and two RBIs.
  • Ryan Vargo (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) got the pitching victory, going six innings, allowing just three runs (one earned) and striking out nine.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon has split or won all four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) series so far this season.
  • The Golden Knights recorded their sixth and seventh double-digit scoring performances of the season on Saturday.
     
UP NEXT
  • Gannon will be back in action on Tuesday, April 17, in a non-conference matchup against Malone at McConnell Family Saturday.
  • Wednesday's game is slated for a 2 p.m. start time.
