HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon's Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) got the start in the non-conference contest on Wednesday. Sapp worked through a pair of walks in the first inning to keep the Pioneers of board.
  • The Golden Knights tallied the first runs of the game in the second inning. Gannon loaded the bases on singles by Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area), followed by a Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) walk. Cody Callaway (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) came to the plate and laced a ground-rule double to left that plated Beach and Mori. Gannon led, 2-0.
  • GU tacked on a run in the third as Gregory Nicolia (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) scored on an RBI-groundout from Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville).
  • Malone put its first run on the board in the fourth inning as a Pioneer runner scored on a wild pitch. Gannon continued to lead, 3-1.
  • The Golden Knights hung a five-spot on the Pioneers in the fifth inning. With two runners aboard, Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) launched a ball off the right field net.
  • Cox reached base on an error and Beach followed with another double, scoring Cardy and Cox.
  • Benack finished off the inning with a single to score Beach. Gannon closed out the fifth with an 8-1 lead.
  • Gannon's ninth run came in bottom of the eighth. Benack got ahold of a ball and shot it over the high wall in right field.
  • Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) closed out the ninth for Gannon, preserving a 9-5 victory.
