Gannon Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Pitt-Johnstown on Friday

THE RUNDOWN
  • Game One Score: Pitt-Johnstown 7, at Gannon 3

  • The Short Story: The Gannon Baseball team dropped the opening pair of games against Pitt-Johnstown on Friday, April 13, at McConnell Family Stadium.  
     
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER  
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • Pitt-Johnstown got off to a fast start in the first inning. The Mountain Cats sent eight batters to the plate in a 30+ minute half inning. Pitt-Johnstown tallied four runs after all was said and done.
  • The Mountain Cats tacked on a pair of runs in the second inning. Back-to-back doubles by Jack Shirk and Scott Thompson had Pitt-Johnstown up, 6-0.
  • The Golden Knights got on the board in the bottom of the second. Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) and Cody Callaway (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) each singled before Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) hit a rocket to the right field wall, scoring both runners. Gannon inched closer at 6-2.
  • Gannon loaded the bases with no outs in the third inning. The Golden Knights managed to get one home as the Mountain Cats turned a double play. Gannon pulled to within 6-3.
  • The only other run in the game came off the bat of the bat of UPJ's Dan Clark. He blasted a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning.
  • Pitt-Johnstown closed out the seventh for a 7-3 victory.
     
GAME NOTES – GAME ONE
  • Gannon collected extra-base hits from Mike Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls), Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) and Beach.
  • Beach went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.
  • The Golden Knights had seven hits spread across seven different batters.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) tossed the opening two innings for Gannon, extending his conference-leading innings pitched count to 51 2/3.
  • Gannon dropped the opening game of the four-game conference series for the third time in four series so far this season. The Golden Knights went on to win the final three games of each of the previous two series when that happened.
  • UPJ's Shirk led all of NCAA Division II baseball coming into Friday's games with a .465 batting average.
     
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Game two began as a pitching duel with David Cricks (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) towing the rubber for the Golden Knights. Cricks retired the Mountain Cats without damage in the first inning and had a 1-2-3 inning in the second.
  • Gannon's first hit of the game came in the second inning as Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) had a single off the pitcher.
  • The first runs of the game came in the fourth inning. Pitt-Johnstown loaded the bases before Tanner Cook lined a single left field, scoring two for the Mountain Cats. UPJ led, 2-0.
  • Gannon had its second hit of the afternoon in the fifth inning. Gregory Nicolia (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) ripped a pitch into right field. Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) walked and the Golden Knights had two runners on with one out.
  • GU couldn't get the runners home, though. A strikeout and groundout left both runners on the base paths.
  • The Golden Knights tried again in the sixth. Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) led off the inning with a double and was moved to third on a Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) groundout.
  • Quiceno lifted a sacrifice fly to right field and the Golden Knights had their first run. Gannon still trailed, 2-1.
  • Gannon couldn't push across the tying run in the seventh, falling by the one run.
     
GAME NOTES – GAME TWO
  • Cardy led the Golden Knights with a 1-for-2 game, scoring GU's lone run.
  • Pitt-Johnstown outhit Gannon, 8-5.
  • Quiceno and Nicolia each had stolen bases for Gannon.
     
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • M. Colosi ranks as the third-toughest NCAA Division II baseball player to strikeout. He was averaging just one strikeout per 33.3 plate appearances entering Friday's games.
  • Gannon produced four doubles in the doubleheader, pushing its season doubles to 64. The Golden Knights rank second among conference teams in that category.
 
UP NEXT
  • Gannon will be back in action on Saturday, April 14, at Pitt-Johnstown, to finish the four-game series.
  • Saturday's doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start time.
