Gannon Baseball Sweeps Ashland in Home-Opening Doubleheader

THE RUNDOWN
  • Game One Score: Gannon 7, Ashland 4
  • Game Two Score: Gannon 5, Ashland 3

  • Location: Erie, Pa. – McConnell Family Stadium
  • The Short Story: The Gannon baseball team picked up two victories over Ashland in the 2018 home opener at McConnell Family Stadium on Sunday (March 18).
 
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER  
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • Ashland got on the board first with a solo shot to right field by Connor Barleben in the second inning.
  • The Eagles made it 2-0 after picking up another run in the top of the third.
  • In the bottom of the third inning, Gannon's Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) ripped a single to third base, scoring Cody Callaway (Elyria, Ohio/Midview). Gannon cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) followed with a ground ball to third that was mishandled, allowing Steighner to score on the play.
  • Gannon took its first lead of the day as Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) produced an RBI-groundout. Mike Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) scored and the Golden Knights took a 3-2 lead to the fourth inning.
  • Gannon extended its lead to 4-2 after Steighner launched a home run to left field in the fifth inning.
  • The Golden Knights weren't done, though. Gannon added two more runs in the fifth and took a 6-2 lead.
  • Ashland's Micah Allen clubbed the Eagles' second home run of the day in the sixth, cutting the deficit to 6-3.
  • Each team tallied a run in the seventh inning as Gannon hung on for a 7-4 victory.
     
GAME NOTES – GAME ONE
  • Steighner went three-for-three from the plate, including a home run, two runs and two RBIs.
  • M. Colosi and Callaway also tied Steighner for a game-high two runs scored.
  • Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) pitched a complete game, giving up seven hits and four runs. He struck out six and walked four.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Ashland's Kevin Browne jumped on a 3-2 offering in the second inning that cleared the high wall in right field. The Eagles led 1-0.
  • Gannon tied the game in the bottom of the third inning. With runners on the corners, Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) put a ball in play that allowed Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) to score from third base.
  • Gannon continued to bat and loaded the bases after Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) was hit by a pitch and Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) walked. Steighner came to the plate and took four straight balls to force home Mori. By the end of the inning, Gannon led, 3-1.
  • Ashland tied it up in the fifth inning after a two-RBI double by Allen plated Matt Littrell and Austin Eifred.
  • The tie didn't last long as GU's Quiceno broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot to center field.Gannon would also push across another run in the inning, taking a 5-3 lead to the sixth inning.
  • Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) came in to relieve Gannon starting pitcher, David Cricks (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton), in the top of the sixth. Cricks went five innings, allowing six hits and three runs.
  • Judy struck out four of the seven batters he faced, picking up his third save of the season.
     
GAME NOTES – GAME TWO
  • Cardy led the Golden Knights with a 3-for-3 day from the plate.
  • Oruch also strung together multiple hits (2-for-3) in game two.
  • Cricks improved to 2-0 on the season, striking out eight in five innings.
  • Gannon out-hit the Eagles, 9-7, in the game.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Five homers were hit in the opening doubleheader, all solo shots.
  • Gannon improves to 2-0 at home this season.
  • The Golden Knights' 12 strikeouts in game two were the most in any of their opening 16 games.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will be back in action on Friday, March 23, at home against Clarion.
