Gannon Rallies For Split in PSAC-Opening Series at Clarion

THE RUNDOWN
  • Game One Score: at Clarion 3, Gannon 1

  • The Short Story: The Gannon baseball team rallied for a split in the 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-opening series against Clarion on Sunday, Mar. 25. The Golden Knights fell, 3-1, before staking a 4-2 victory in the second game.
 
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER  
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME ONE
  • Gannon got on the board first as the Golden Knights got aggressive on the base paths in the fourth inning. Mike Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) stole third base and an errant throw allowed him to scamper home, putting Gannon up, 1-0.
  • Clarion's Chandler Palyas produced a bunt-single RBI in the fifth inning to tie the game up at one run apiece.
  • Gannon left two runners on in the sixth inning as Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) and Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) both worked walks but couldn't circle home.
  • In the bottom of the inning, Clarion cashed in on its runners in scoring position. Cole Shaffer singled home Matt Privette and Brady Andrews produced a sacrifice bunt that scored Devin Beverly. Clarion took a 3-1 lead to the seventh inning.
  • Gregory Nicolia (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) worked a one-out walk in the top of the seventh but Gannon fell short by a 3-1 margin.
     
GAME NOTES – GAME ONE
  • M. Colosi stole his fourth base of the season, also scoring the Golden Knights' only run.
  • Gannon piled up a season-high eight walks in the game.
  • Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) pitched six innings of six-hit, three-run ball. He also struck out four and walked two.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME TWO
  • Gannon got on the board first again in the second game. Ian Steighner (Chicora, Pa./Butler) hit a two-out double, followed by a Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) single, plating Steighner. The Golden Knights went to the bottom of the second up, 1-0.
  • GU tallied its second run in the fourth inning. Mori led-off the inning with a single, and advanced to second on an Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) groundout.  
  • Cox hit a ball to second base that was misplayed, allowing Mori to come home on the play. Gannon led, 2-0.
  • Clarion got a run back in the bottom of the fourth and tied it up with a run in the bottom of the fifth with single runs in each frame. The game was tied at two, headed to the sixth inning.
  • Gannon loaded the bases in the top of the eighth inning. Steighner stepped to the plate and ripped a first-pitch RBI-single, giving Gannon the lead. Joey DiBridge (Irwin, Pa./Hempfield Area) also scored on the play after the Clarion defense committed an error.
  • Gannon led, 4-2, and closed out the bottom of the eighth inning for the extra-inning victory.
     
GAME NOTES – GAME TWO
  • Steighner led the Golden Knights with a 2-for-4 afternoon, scoring a run while also driving in one.
  • Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) picked up the pitching victory, tossing three scorless innings while striking out four.
  • David Cricks (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) started the game, pitching five innings of two-run, seven-strikeout ball.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon played its first extra-inning game since May 7, 2017, against Clarion in the season finale.
  • Gannon picked up its first conference victory of the season with the win at Clarion.
  • The Golden Knights' 11 strikeouts in game two were the second-most in any of their opening 18 games.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will be back in action on Monday, March 26, at home against Clarion.
  • The doubleheader, originally scheduled for Friday, March 23, is slated for a 1 p.m. start time.
