Gannon Women's Water Polo Drops Pair of Matches to VMI and George Washington

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's water polo dropped the first match of the day to VMI, 19-11. The Lady Knights were led by Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School)'s four goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gannon and VMI traded goals throughout the first quarter. The Keydets held a slim 4-3 lead through the first eight minutes.
  • Barr scored the only goal for the Lady Knights in the second quarter. VMI pulled out a 9-4 halftime lead after scoring five times in the quarter.
  • Gannon used goals from Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Campbell Ruh (Walnut, Calif./Lutheran High School of Orange County) in the third quarter but VMI continued its hot scoring streak, edging out to a 16-6 lead headed to the fourth quarter.
  • The Lady Knights outscored the Keydets, 5-3, in the quarter but couldn't complete the comeback, falling, 19-11.
     
  • GAME NOTES
  • Barr led Gannon in the loss with four goals and three steals.
  • Francesca Williamson (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) issued two goals, drew two exclusions and stole a ball for GU.
  • Cooney and Ruh also tallied two goals during the contest.

  • Ruh scored the first two goals of the game as the Lady Knights charged ahead, 2-0.
  • George Washington tallied the final six of the quarter, however, taking a 6-2 lead to the second period.
  • Williamson tallied the Lady Knights' lone goal of the second quarter. George Washington held a 10-3 advantage at halftime.
  • Gannon came out in the third quarter, scoring the only three goals in the period. Barr, Ruh and Williamson combined on the trio of goals.
  • The Lady Knights closed within 10-6, headed to the final period.
  • Gannon tallied the final three goals of the game but couldn't complete the comeback, dropping a 14-9 decision.

GAME NOTES
  • Ruh led the Lady Knights with a career-high five goals and three steals.
  • Williamson powered three balls between the pipes for the Lady Knights, while Kristi Howe (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) scored the Lady Knights' other goal.
  • Gannon fell to George Washington, 12-7, in the first matchup of the season on Feb. 10
